Today, Lieutenant Bob Collins wrapped up a 22-year career with the Normal Fire Department. His retirement ceremony was held at Fire Station 2 to a crowd of family, friends, and colleagues.

Lieutenant Collins leaves a lasting legacy of mentorship with the next generation of firefighters.

His dedication to the department and our community will be sorely missed, but the lasting effects of his skills as a leader are apparent in all that have worked under his command at any point in their career.

In his farewell speech, he talked of leaving things a little nicer than you found them, and taking time to mentor the next generation because when you take care of your people, they take care of you. We couldn’t think of a more perfect message to describe how Lt. Collins approached his duties every day.

Lieutenant Collins, we wish you nothing but the best in retirement. You have earned it.

Yesterday, our newest firefighter candidates got hands-on training in Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations as part of their post-academy training.

RIT firefighters are trained to quickly locate, rescue and provide assistance to a firefighter who becomes lost, trapped, injured or otherwise needs help at a fire. Candidates practiced Mayday response, firefighter rescue techniques, air management and working together under challenging conditions.

Training like this prepares our firefighters to be ready when one of their own needs help.

Don't forget - this is happening TOMORROW! Sign up for a slot and get your child's seat inspected by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians!
