CNEWA Spotlight: As conflict heats up in northern Ethiopia, the country’s Catholic bishops are urging leaders to choose dialogue over war and calling on Ethiopians to pray for peace.
The bishops warned that the most vulnerable — particularly children, women, the elderly and the sick — suffer the most during times of conflict. They also urged all Ethiopians to pray the rosary for peace, especially throughout October.
They called for forgiveness, reconciliation and lasting peace for the people of Ethiopia.

🌿 Season of Creation has come to an end.
Yesterday, Oct. 4, marked the conclusion of the Season of Creation — a time to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for our common home.
Over the past month, we’ve shared stories from India, Ukraine, Lebanon, Ethiopia and the West Bank, highlighting the ways environmental destruction affects communities, livelihoods and our shared future.
But the season also reminds us that all is not lost. As Pope Francis wrote, humanity is capable of “rising above” our challenges, choosing what is good and making a new start.
Thank you for following along with us throughout the Season of Creation. 🌎

🌿 When the land suffers, communities suffer too.
Across the occupied West Bank, uprooted olive trees, damaged water pipelines and contaminated farmland are threatening Palestinian livelihoods and the natural environment.
Olive trees, some more than 1,000 years old, are being lost alongside the agricultural land and water resources that generations of Palestinian families depend on.
The environmental impact extends beyond farmland, disrupting wildlife habitats, biodiversity and access to essential resources.
During the Season of Creation, we reflect on our responsibility to protect our common home and the communities whose lives are deeply connected to it.

Every child deserves a safe place to call home.
Following the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, we honor the millions of children whose lives have been uprooted by war, poverty, persecution, and disaster. Too many face hunger, separation, and uncertainty—simply because they are vulnerable. But hope endures.
Across the globe, the Church is stepping up to welcome, protect, and care for these children. In Ethiopia, the Sisters of Divine Providence offer vital medical care and nutrition at the Medhanealem Medium Clinic, helping families rebuild their lives.
As Pope Leo XIV reminds us, “Welcoming a child in need is an act of humanity and faith.”
You can be part of this mission. Your gift helps the Church remain a lifeline for displaced children and families—offering safety, compassion, and a brighter future.

🌱 Planting trees is planting hope.
In Ethiopia, the Green Legacy Initiative aims to plant 50 billion trees by 2030 to restore forests, protect water resources and strengthen communities against drought and climate change.
Across the country, people are taking part in the effort — including Catholic communities and young people learning the importance of caring for creation.
“Trees give us hope and help us preserve water resources that can protect our soil and help us produce our own food security.”
— Salem Berhanu, entrepreneur
