Nearly three decades of work. One extraordinary honor.

On Friday night, Ubuntu Pathways received an award we never saw coming.

At The Herald’s annual Citizens of the Year Awards, Ubuntu was not among the announced nominees or award categories. Then, in a surprise moment, The Herald presented Ubuntu with the Sister Ethel Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing our “decades of uplifting the disenfranchised people of Gqeberha.”

Named for Sister Ethel Normoyle, The Herald’s first Citizen of the Year in 1989, this special award honors a lifetime of sustained service to the people of Nelson Mandela Bay.

For Ubuntu, it is an extraordinary recognition of nearly 30 years of work alongside this community, and it belongs to every staff member, family, partner and supporter who has been part of that journey.

We could not be prouder.

Strong learning starts with strong support. At the Ubuntu School, students have access to counselling and mental health services that help them feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

The countdown begins! Less than 2 months to go until the Ubuntu Gala on 17 October at the Inanda Club in Johannesburg. Join us for an evening of celebrating the bright futures we are building together.

Good nutrition is part of a strong education. Every day, Ubuntu School students receive two nutritious meals and a snack. It’s one of the many ways we ensure every child has the energy they need to stay focused, engaged, and ready to learn.

Every day, children in Ubuntu’s Early Childhood Development programme spend time on the playground exploring, playing, and growing through active outdoor learning.

Through STEAM education and coding instruction, Ubuntu School students learn to solve problems, think creatively, and build the digital skills and confidence to shape their future.
