Last week, Homeless Services United (HSU)celebrated its Legacy in Action Gala. Honorees included George Nashak of Care For the Homeless and Steve Rockman of Community Care Consultants LLC. HousingPlus was happy to be in the room with these legends. The event also honored the late Fred Shack (Urban Pathways). Deputy Mayor Helen Arteaga and NYC Department of Homeless Services Administrator Reesa Henderson emceed portions of the event.

Today we congratulate and celebrate Mr. Ron Abad, CEO of Community Housing Innovations (CHI)! Ron is a leader with 30+ years of experience in housing and community-based healthcare solutions. Among many recognitions, Mr. Abad has been noted for the 914Inc. CEO & Leadership Excellence Award (2026), City & State's Who's Who in Affordable Housing (2026) and the Leviticus Fund Cornerstone Award (2024). Given his distinguished career, we at HousingPlus are incredibly proud to announce that Ron is our newest Board Member! Ron's work gives him a deep understanding of solutions that can move people out of poverty, including supportive housing, eviction prevention, and financial literacy, making him a wonderful addition to our Board.

25 years ago today, on September 11, 2001, New York City tragically lost over 2,500 people in the World Trade Center attacks. Many we lost were heroes; everyone we lost was our neighbor. Today, we uplift and remember all who were lost on 9/11/2001 in NYC, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, PA.

HousingPlus CEO Karen Ford was proud to celebrate West Indian American Cultural Heritage over the Labor Day weekend at the annual parade. At the event, Karen joined leaders such as Governor Kathy Hochul, Representative Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO of FPWA, among folks from many other organizations like BronxWorks and Urban Resource Institute (URI). It was a beautiful day in Brooklyn!

In one year, we will reach the legal deadline to . Our staff from Justice Works and transitional housing joined the Urban Justice Center for a rally on Monday. At this event, advocates marked the ongoing effort to reduce the Rikers Island population. Alternatives to incarceration are one way to ensure the timely closure of Rikers Island. We are proud to stand with other organizations and mark this occasion as we continue to fight for justice for all those detained at Rikers, as well as a swift closure of the facility.

Supportive housing is made possible by partnership. When it comes to building new supportive housing, every door that opens is the result of months and years of planning, financing, building, staffing, and creating a space that our clients can call home.

Our next project at Van Sinderen would not be possible without the assistance of Nonprofit Finance Fund. Thank you, NFF, CSH, and all legislators and officials who joined us on August 18.

On August 18, HousingPlus, Nonprofit Finance Fund, and CSH hosted elected and appointed leaders from across the city and state. At this dynamic event, we showcased the difference a home can make for New Yorkers impacted by homelessness.

Among our attendees were Miguel Bonilla, Deputy Director of Capacity Building at the Mayor's Office for Nonprofit Services (pictured on the left), who presented HousingPlus with a special Certificate of Recognition signed by Mayor Mamdani.

In addition, representatives from the offices of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and many other local leaders joined in this on-site visit to one of our largest permanent supportive housing projects.
