Genevieve Chandler Peterkin known to all as Sister was born in 1928 in Florence and grew up exploring the creeks and plantations around Murrells Inlet and Wachesaw. As a child she listened intently to the stories shared by her mother Genevieve Willcox Chandler and by older residents of the region including those who had lived through earlier times. Those voices shaped her deep commitment to the history and the natural beauty of the coast.

She graduated from Coker College in 1949 as senior class president and May Queen then earned a masters degree in library science from the University of North Carolina. After working as head librarian for the United States Army in Germany she returned to become the founding librarian of the Georgetown County Public Library. She later served on the county school board and worked as an environmental advocate on the boards of the Coastal Conservation League and the Freewoods Foundation. In 2001 Coastal Carolina University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of her service.

Sister shared the richness of her home through South Carolina Educational Television documentaries and through books. With William Baldwin she wrote Heaven Is a Beautiful Place a memoir that brings the places and people of the coast vividly to life. She also helped edit Coming Through which preserves the Gullah oral histories collected by her mother during the Works Progress Administration years.

This artwork once helped settle a question about whether a building had stood on a certain property confirming the careful memory of those who knew the landscape well. Sister Peterkin devoted her days to listening recording and safeguarding the stories and the shores of Murrells Inlet. Through her writing her activism and her quiet sketches the spirit of that place continues to endure.

This photo captures Voyagers View and Marina in the days after Hurricane Hugo tore through Murrells Inlet, SC in September 1989. The three-story building still stands, but the docks are shattered, debris fills the parking lot and water, and a hole opens in the roof.

The structure was only a few years old when the storm arrived. In the mid-1970s the site was Inlet Port Marina, a working waterfront run by Barry Schoch and JB Orr. Charter captains brought their catches in at the boat ramp, and in 1979 Tom Swatzel ran the boat Catch 22 from those slips. Around 1986 Billy and Cotton Player bought the property and built the large restaurant that turned it into Voyagers View. It quickly became a popular stop for locals and visitors who came for the food, the view, and the boats.

Hugo tested that new chapter hard. Storm surge and winds left the waterfront looking like this. The marina was repaired and kept going. In 1998 it briefly served as homeport for South Carolina’s first casino boat before the operation ended. Voyagers View continued into the early 2000s, then changed hands a couple of times. By 2014 the site had been reinvented as Marshview Marina, returning more fully to its roots as a working fishing marina with bait and tackle and boat rentals.

Cindy “Shug” Sellers is the owner of Shugs By The Inlet, the popular custom jewelry shop at 4650 Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet. Everyone knows her as Shug (short for Sugar), and the store reflects her warm, personal style. She creates unique handmade pieces, often incorporating seashells collected from local beaches, turquoise, and other natural materials, producing one-of-a-kind work that customers return for again and again.

The shop’s deeper purpose grew from a personal act of generosity. In 2010, even though she and her ex-husband Jerry Sellers had been divorced for nearly a decade, Shug donated one of her kidneys to him. He lived another 11 months before passing away from cancer. While grieving and walking the beach, she began collecting broken seashells and taught herself to turn them into jewelry. In 2013 she opened Shugs By The Inlet as a living tribute to Jerry and as a platform to raise awareness for living organ donation. She also founded the related non-profit Shug’s in Memory of Jerry Sellers to further that mission.

Beyond the jewelry, Shug is known for the welcoming atmosphere of the shop and for using every conversation as an opportunity to educate people about the power of living donation. The family is also connected to the “Shug Shack,” a vacation rental in the heart of Murrells Inlet.

In short, Cindy “Shug” Sellers is a well-known and well-liked local figure whose handmade jewelry and personal story have become part of the fabric of Murrells Inlet.

Russell Vereen is a lifelong Murrells Inlet, SC native whose family has been part of the local restaurant scene since the early 1960s. In 1963 his parents bought the Wayside Restaurant, where Russell began working at age 10 washing dishes and bussing tables. He grew up in a house behind the restaurant and learned the business from the ground up..focusing on quality food at fair prices, good staff, and treating every customer like family.

After Hurricane Hugo devastated the area in 1989, Vereen saw an opportunity. He salvaged the upstairs raw bar, cocktail lounge, and waiting area from the destroyed Nance’s Creek Front Restaurant, moved the structure across the street, raised it off the ground, and opened Russell’s Seafood Grill and Raw Bar in 1993 with help from his father. The elevated “treehouse” building quickly became a local institution, often described as a museum of Murrells Inlet history, a classic fish cabin, and “the last piece of old Murrells Inlet.”

Vereen is especially known for preserving the Inlet’s traditional seafood culture and memorabilia. He has collected and restored old local signs (including a large “Welcome to Murrells Inlet S.C. Seafood Capital” sign that he pieced back together after it was damaged) and fills the walls with historical artifacts. Guests frequently note his personal touch, greeting diners with a handshake and introduction and thanking them on the way out, creating the feeling of old-school Murrells Inlet hospitality.
