A lot of people are still wondering why Helene isn't headed right up the East Coast. It's because of a phenomenon known as the "Fujiwara Effect". When two low-pressure systems get relatively close, they have a tendency to pinwheel around one another with one, often absorbing the other. In this case, the upper low over the Midwest sinks south and slings Helene north then northwest. It's saving the eastern Carolinas from much more significant impacts.
