Summer is here 🌞
•
•
Whether it's running goals at the pool, during a nature walk, at the playground, through water play, or while grabbing ice cream, some of the best teaching moments happen outside of the typical therapy setting.

Breaks are not the enemy of learning 💯
•
•
When taught intentionally, breaks can become communication, self advocacy, predictability, and regulation.
•
•
The goal is not just “get back to work.”
The goal is helping learners understand when a break is available, how to request one appropriately, and how to return when they are ready.
•
•
That’s clinical.
That’s functional.
That’s skill building.
•
•
So let’s make it a little fun:
Which break based win are you choosing today? 👀

Can DRA still work without extinction?
•
•
Yes..... but the details matter.
•
•
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior focuses on strengthening a safer, more appropriate replacement behavior instead of only trying to reduce the challenging behavior.
•
•
That might look like reinforcing:
✨ Requesting a break
✨ Asking for attention
✨ Using communication
✨ Engaging with materials appropriately
✨ Tolerating a difficult task for a short amount of time
•
•
In real life, extinction is not always possible, practical, or safe. But we can still teach skills, reinforce functional alternatives, and help learners build long term success.
•
•
The goal is not just “less problem behavior.”
The goal is more communication, more independence, and more tools that actually work. 💛

•
Sometimes extinction isn’t realistic, safe, or appropriate.
That doesn’t mean teaching stops.💯
•
•
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior without extinction focuses on building a better, more functional response while still meeting the learner where they are.
•
•
Instead of only asking, “How do we stop the behavior?”
We ask:
🟡What is the behavior helping them access or escape?
🟡And how can we teach a safer, more effective way to get that need met?
•
•
Replacement skills matter. Function matters. Reinforcement matters.

Can DRA still work without extinction?
•
•
Yes......and this episode breaks down how. 👏
•
•
Because in real life, extinction is not always safe, practical, or possible.
•
•
This one is perfect for RBTs, BCBA candidates, clinicians, and anyone learning how reinforcement strategies work in the real world.

Sometimes autism shows up in ways people don't typically recognize, and we often misunderstand it.
•
•
A delayed response may be processing time.
Direct communication may be clarity, not attitude.
A big reaction to a “small” change may be sensory or routine-related distress.
•
•
An intense interest may be joy, regulation, and connection.
•
•
The more we understand, the less we mislabel.
Autism does not always match the stereotype, and support gets better when we pause, observe, and ask what the behavior may be communicating.
•
•
Because acceptance starts with understanding. 💙
