Celebrate the Renaissance spirit of Burglund with an elegant night of heritage, culture, community, and possibility.

Burglund's story is bigger than any single chapter.

It is the story of a thriving Black business community, where places like the Harlem Nightingale, Lyric Theater, The Birdcage, Brock's McCumbo #2, Nobles Bros. Cleaners, Quin Motel, South of the Border Cafe, and many others created an ecosystem of entrepreneurship, entertainment, gathering, and opportunity.

It is an education story—built around Burglund School and generations of educators, students, families, and community members who understood education as a pathway to opportunity and leadership.

And it is a Civil Rights story—rooted in local Black leadership and institutions long before the height of the Modern Civil Rights Movement and carried forward by young people, families, churches, organizers, and everyday citizens who helped make McComb nationally significant.

On Saturday, October 24, the Black History Gallery invites you to experience all of these stories at the Burglund Renaissance Gala.

This is an evening designed to remember where we've been, reflect on where we are, and reimagine what comes next.

Immerse yourself in history with an overnight experience in Old Salem

Joe McGill, Jr, Slave Dwelling Project founder and executive director, will hold a special Slave Dwelling Project Program in collaboration with Old Salem Museums & Gardens overnight on September 28th, 2026.

The museum will lead a late afternoon tour of historic buildings and landscapes with heirloom garden gathering to accompany a Moravian chicken pie supper (with veggie alternative) in the 1769 Single Brothers House. Following the meal, walk to the grounds of the 1823 Log Church (established for enslaved people in and around Salem) for the signature SDP campfire conversation, a safe-space to talk about hard things.
