Xterra Health’s commitment to veterans comes from lived experience. Its founder, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐡𝐫, served as an 𝐀𝐫𝐦𝐲 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟕𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. Today, his , led team helps fellow veterans navigate the VA disability process through independent medical evaluations, nexus letters, and disability benefits questionnaires. Their work includes support for claims involving traumatic brain injury.

This October, retired Green Beret, and multiple TBI survivor, Nick Ward of Lesser Known Operators will take Reps for R3covery across all 50 states to raise awareness and support for Special Operations personnel living with TBI. We’re grateful to have Xterra Health behind him and behind a mission that matters deeply to both of our teams.

Why can a brain injury change the way someone reacts?

Because your brain helps control more than memory and movement.

It also helps regulate emotions, impulse control, frustration, attention, and how quickly you can process what is happening around you.

After a TBI, that regulation can become harder.

Someone may get overwhelmed faster.

They may become irritated by something that never bothered them before.

They may have a shorter fuse, struggle to shift their attention, or need more time to process a conversation.

That does not mean every emotional change is caused by TBI.

But it does mean that changes in mood and behavior can be part of the injury.

TBI affects the brain.

And the brain affects almost everything we do.

That is why we are going to keep breaking TBI down, one piece at a time.

Understanding TBI shouldn’t require a medical degree.

Today, on the 25th anniversary, Project R3con honors the nearly 3,000 lives tragically lost on September 11, 2001, in a horrific terrorist attack. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger; the service members who answered the call; and every family whose life was changed forever.

May we continue to honor their sacrifice through service, unity, and a commitment to never leave our fellow Americans behind.

Someone with a TBI might be walking, talking, working, parenting, or going to the gym while also dealing with:

Forgetting what they were just told
Struggling to find the right word
Getting overwhelmed by noise or light
Having headaches that won’t quit
Sleeping too much, too little, or never feeling rested
Losing focus halfway through a task
Feeling irritated or angry much faster than before
Struggling with balance or dizziness
Feeling mentally exhausted after things that used to be easy

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐁𝐈 𝐬𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝.
The brain helps control nearly everything we do, so an injury to the brain can show up in a lot of different ways. And no two brain injuries look exactly the same.
