Question of the day: What classic work of literature has reportedly been challenged because "animals should not use human language" and "putting animals and humans on the same level" is "harmful"?

Banned Books Week starts today! Banned Books Week acknowledges the continued censorship attempts and ALA, including the Intellectual Freedom Round Table, provides resources to libraries to deal with "challenges" (a book is not "banned" unless the challenge results in removal from the shelf). These attempts come from individuals with concerns about the content of books on the grounds of their personal beliefs, groups who lobby together to put together lists of content they find offensive in order to challenge them at either individual libraries or library systems, and state-wide challenges at public libraries and schools coming from elected leaders. Libraries are interested in protecting intellectual freedom of the public (their "freedom to read") even when other individuals from the public do not enjoy/approve of the content of certain books.

Watch 'The Red Lady of Huntingdon College,' October 22 at 10 PM, and don't miss the re-airing of "The Phantom Steamboat of the Tombigbee" next Thursday, October 8, at 10 PM!

Every few weeks, the Library will be featuring something from Huntingdon history in the Archives Center. This week, we are featuring a detachable collar from the 1920's of what was then named the Woman's College of Alabama! This collar was used for senior class photos and, possibly, commencement; it is featured in the 1927 and 1928 Bells and Pomegranates yearbooks.

There are dozens of artifacts from Huntingdon history in the archives, drop by or make an appointment for a visit.
