The Alabama Voting Rights Coalition (AVRC) and Southern Poverty Law Center are proud to announce the filing of the first state voting rights omnibus bill.

Senate Bill 7, aka The Alabama Voting Rights Act, will position Alabama as a state that safeguards democracy by ensuring all eligible voters have access to fair and safe election processes, without undue and unnecessary barriers.

🗣️ 🚨 🚨 🚨 Alert! SB1 will likely be on the House floor for a vote TOMORROW, Thursday March 7th. The House will meet tomorrow at 9AM. Contact your House Reps NOW at tinyurl.com/StopSB1petition

SB1 by Sen Gudger would criminalize individuals or civic organization employees who assist with the absentee ballot application process if any form of compensation or gift, such as gas money, is exchanged. The bill does not define what constitutes a “gift,” leaving room for interpretation.

This bill is a blatant attack on civic engagement organizations who would no longer be able to reimburse volunteers for gas or provide stamps to assist with the absentee ballot application process.

Room Change! SB1 (anti-absentee ballot) has a new room number for tomorrow's public hearing. SB1 will be in room 304 tomorrow, Wednesday at 9:00AM in the State House. Join us in Montgomery tomorrow and Pack the State House!

📌SB1 by Sen Gudger SB1 would charge civic organization employees with a felony simply for assisting voters with absentee ballot applications. This includes distributing or delivering absentee ballot applications, a free document readily available on the Secretary of State’s website.

❗Because SB1 does not define “gift” or “payment”, something as simple as your neighbor baking a cake as a ‘thank you’ for your assistance with their absentee ballot application could get you charged with a Class C felony, and your neighbor could be charged with a Class B felony.

The new larger room has live-stream capabilities, which means if you are unable to attend in person, you can still tap in and watch the public hearing online at https://alison.legislature.state.al.us/live-stream (select room 304)

Public hearing on SB1 this Weds, 2/28!

📢SB1 passed the Senate yesterday but the fight IS NOT OVER! SB1 still needs to make its way through the AL House- SB1 will be assigned to a committee, that committee will have to vote on SB1 and the full House will need to vote on SB1 before it can become a law.

❗Our petition is now being sent to your AL State Reps- even if you've used this action before, it's important to do it again❗ Sign the petition to ask your AL state rep to VOTE NO! tinyurl.com/StopSB1petition

📢📢All hands on deck! SB1 will have a public hearing on Weds, Feb 7 at 1:30PM and we need to pack the meeting! Senate Bill 1, introduced by Sen. Garlan Gudger, represents a blatant attack on our fundamental right to vote, continuing Alabama's notorious legacy of voter suppression.

SB1 targets civic organizations, churches, and individuals who are simply trying to help their neighbors exercise their democratic right through absentee ballots, threatening to criminalize them.
