Wally Dog Farm now has drip irrigation in the entire back 40 along with a new goddess water fountain. We have planted the raised beds with sugar snap peas, green beans, strawberries, broccoli rabi, carrots, spinach, sunflowers, garlic and a medicinal herb bed.

Two weeks ago, I ordered 50 Mara Des Bois Strawberry starts from a Strawberry Acres Farm in upstate NY. We planted them in two of the new raised beds and now with the nice rains and warm Spring days we have been having they have tripled in size already.

Mara Des Bois are a specialty strawberry developed in France. The small to medium size berries are bright red with a high gloss and are blessed with the highest flavor and fragrance of any strawberry variety. Planted in the spring, they begin bearing during the summer and into the fall.

Given everything that is going on in the world, I'm sure most of us missed this but Yesterday was the first day of Spring.

"For much of the last century, the spring equinox has occurred on March 20 or 21. This year, however, the equinox happens on the 19th in all U.S. time zones, making it the earliest spring we’ll have seen in our lives (so far). The last time spring arrived this early was in 1896—a 124 years ago.

The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night”—aequus (equal) and nox (night). On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world.

Happy Spring. Happy Planting.

Our reclaimed redwood raised beds are settled into the back garden. And we finally finished moving the 7 yards of lovely "Local Hero" soil down the 70 plus steps to the backyard as well. Cross training!

Now the "shelter in place" directive will give us plenty of time to start planting soon.
