Remembering D Day….. The Greatest Generation. The stories told by my Grandparents and what they did and the others who survived or lost their lives for us to be here today!

Memorial Day Weekend was another Holiday even though my grandparents served and fought in WW2 and Dad Vietnam. It set in after joining the Army. B Troop 1-1 Cav 1St Armored Division Buedingen Germany. I came to know CSM Cooke before as one of my 1St Sargents and CSM Bragg who was the aging Vietnam-era Cav. Fresh from AIT this was my first duty station. Once the Army and 1Sgt figure out one can be an admin, a unit painter (did a lot of CAV color parking spots to later large unit Murals). Some of them stayed at staff duty and HQ until Armstrong Keserne was turned back over to the Germans. 1st Sgt Cooke every morning walked from the HQ to the billets. One was to kick out non US folks who were visiting to long haha. My room was the very first room checked and the at-length discussions about CQ and Staff Duty logs and such as I must of had the number or last name that started with an A. It was not so much the tracking but the well-being of each soldier. Just as someone from the unit picked me up in the dead of night but prepared that private and where to go and who to see first thing in the am. He believed that each arriving soldier needed to be welcome into 1-1 CAV. There are many stories I have and will share some over holiday. He was everything that was written about him after his passing. One of the major reasons I do what I do to this day is because he was one such mentor to me and instilled to take care of each other.
