Home is more than four walls. It’s the familiar routines, the laughter, the memories, and the people who make us feel safe, valued, and loved.

At Home Instead, we believe everyone deserves to feel that sense of home, wherever they live. Our care professionals are there to make everyday moments meaningful and help everyone continue living life on their terms.

There's nothing more meaningful to our team than hearing from the families we have the privilege of serving.

Knowing that our caregivers and office team have made a difference in a family's life is exactly why we do what we do.

Our Client Care Advisors, Becky and Rachel, have had a great time getting out into the community and making new connections for our clients this week!

They recently attended an estate planning presentation where they were able to learn more about state laws and connect with local professionals who can be trusted resources for our clients and their families.

They also had the opportunity to attend an in-service with Alabama Hospice. It was a great chance to meet some of the wonderful people on their team, share more about the services we provide, and talk about how we can work together to support hospice patients and their families.

We’re so thankful for these opportunities to learn, build relationships, and find more ways to serve the people in our community! 🤍

When dementia changes the way someone communicates, it can be easy to wonder what they are able to understand or feel. But moments of connection can still surprise us.

In this powerful story from Caregiver Chats, gerontologist Dr. Julie Masters shares how a simple question brought a meaningful response from a man in the final day of his life.

For anyone loving and caring for someone with memory changes, this is your reminder to keep talking, keep sharing and keep being present. 💚

Who We Are:

Home Instead Mobile & Baldwin County provides in-home care that helps older adults continue living safely, comfortably, and independently at home.

We believe home is more than an address. It’s where people have built their lives, made memories, and feel most comfortable. Our goal is to help seniors remain in that familiar environment while giving their families confidence that someone is there to help.

What We Do:

Our Care Professionals provide personalized, one-on-one support based on each client’s needs. This can include companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, transportation and accompaniment to appointments, errands, personal care, mobility assistance, and help with everyday activities.

But what we provide goes beyond a list of services.

Sometimes it’s driving someone to a doctor’s appointment. Sometimes it’s preparing a favorite meal. Sometimes it’s helping a client get dressed, taking them to a fitness class, or simply sitting down and having a conversation.

Our goal is to help our clients age safely and confidently at home while continuing to live life on their terms.

Veterans Benefits:
Eligible veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA benefits that can help offset the cost of in-home care. We can help families understand whether VA benefits may be an option and guide them through the process.

At Home. With Family. With the Right Support.

That’s what Home Instead is here to do.

At the end of life, it can feel like there is so much to do, say and get right. 🫂

But sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can offer someone we love is simply our presence.

In this Caregiver Chats conversation, Dr. Lakelyn is joined by gerontologist Dr. Julie Masters to talk about the emotions that can come with end-of-life caregiving, from identity shifts and saying goodbye to finding connection through life review and memory changes.

If you are navigating this season with someone you love, you are not alone. 💚 Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts.

This is one of our Care Pros with one of our clients. On the Eastern Shore.

Someone who lives at home, surrounded by the life she’s built, and has no intention of aging anywhere else.

Her family has jobs. They have kids. They have responsibilities and lives of their own. They take care of what they can, and we help take care of the rest.

Someone to talk to. Someone to drive her to a doctor’s appointment. Cook a meal. Pick up groceries. Get out of the house. Help with the everyday things that can become a little harder with age.

Heck, we even help some of our 90 year old clients get to their fitness classes. How awesome is that?

Sometimes “care” looks like something medical.

And sometimes it looks exactly like this picture.

Sitting by the water, having a conversation, enjoying a beautiful day, and helping someone continue living the life they love, in the place they call home.

That’s what aging at home can look like. And we think it’s pretty special.

After a dementia diagnosis, it's common for families to pull back from social situations, but isolation can make the journey even harder.

Even when someone has difficulty finding words or remembering names, they may still recognize the emotions, relationships, and people who help them feel safe.

A familiar voice. A favorite song. Holding a hand. Simply sitting together. These moments of connection still matter.

One of the things we love most about our Home Instead caregivers is learning about all the incredible talents, passions, and experiences they bring with them.

We recently had the opportunity to attend a showing featuring the beautiful paintings of one of our wonderful caregivers, and we couldn’t be more proud to cheer her on! 🎨🖌️

Our caregivers give so much of themselves to our clients each day, and we love having the opportunity to show up for our caregivers just as they show up for our clients!

Have you ever felt like something was different with someone you love, even if you could not explain exactly why?

Dementia can affect much more than memory. Changes in communication, judgment, mood, behavior, or problem-solving can sometimes appear before significant memory loss.

Trust your instincts. If something feels different, it is okay to ask questions and seek support.

Have you ever wondered if a loved one’s changes were “just part of getting older?”

Dementia is not a normal part of aging.

If you have noticed changes in someone you love and are carrying questions you do not quite know how to ask, you are not alone. We are here to help families find support and take the next step when they are ready.

Have you ever heard “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” used as if they mean the same thing?

It is understandable. But dementia is an umbrella term for symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and everyday life. Alzheimer’s disease is one specific type of dementia.

Learning the language around a diagnosis can help families feel more prepared for the road ahead.

Are we helping, or are we making assumptions based on age? Sometimes the best way to support an older adult is simply to ask what they want and need. By listening first, we can help preserve independence.

What do you think? When does helping cross the line into ageism? 🤔

Narcissistic parents don’t inspire their children to care for them. Sometimes, the well of loving memories and connection has run dry. 💔

In this Caregiver Chats conversation, Dr. Lakelyn and licensed mental health counselor Rebecca Johnson unpack one of caregiving’s most complicated and often unspoken realities: caring for a narcissistic parent.

There’s more to the Iowa State Fair than corn dogs and butter sculptures—it is also a place for meaningful conversations. 🎡🌭

Dr. Lakelyn spent the day at the Home Instead booth talking with fairgoers about aging, caregiving and the many ways families can find support.

One conversation that will stay with her was with Marv, who cared for his late wife, Sharon. He shared how meaningful Home Instead’s support was for them—a powerful reminder that care can make a real difference for both the person receiving it and the family member beside them.

She also stopped by the Iowa Department of Transportation booth to talk about one of the harder caregiving conversations: driving. Starting early, leading with empathy and focusing on safety can help make the conversation feel less like taking something away and more like supporting independence.

Grateful for everyone who stopped to share their stories, questions and wisdom. Stay tuned for more from the fair! 💜 Iowa DOT Iowa State Fair
