As part of the United Way of Southwest Alabama 100 Days of Caring, the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center, Regions Arena (Regions Arena), and Saenger Theatre employees volunteered earlier in May at Penelope's Closet to organize and clean their store! Proceeds from the store benefit Penelope House.
It was a great experience to give back and support the community where Oak View Group operates!
We recently hosted the Gulf of America Alliance for Gulf Con. They quizzed attendees from across Gulf states on how to pronounce some places along the Gulf Coast — and one name had everyone stumped. Check it out!
Think you know how to say it? Head to the comments for the history behind the Gulf Coast street name that had everyone guessing! ⬇️

The convention center is named after Arthur R. Outlaw whose vision helped shape the city’s downtown waterfront.
Outlaw served as Mayor of Mobile from 1967–1968 and later became the city’s first elected mayor (since 1911), serving from 1985–1989. During his elected term, his plan included construction of a waterfront convention center.
Although Outlaw was defeated by Mike Dow in 1989, Dow carried the convention center project through to completion. The facility opened in 1993.
Outlaw was married to Dorothy “Dot” Smith Outlaw, who was deeply involved in the Mobile community and Mardi Gras culture. Dot served on the MCA Court in 1949 while Arthur was a Knight. She was also active in several mystic societies and the Junior League of Mobile. Dot passed away in 2022.
The Mobile Convention Center was renamed in 1999. Arthur R. Outlaw passed away in 2000.
The venue that bears his name continues to play a major role in Mobile traditions today, hosting events such as the Mobile Carnival Association Queen Coronation and JLM’s Christmas Jubilee.
