Some deck rebuilding from last Fall. This landing is completely exposed, so rot is unfortunately inevitable. That said, I replaced with better quality material: KDAT Pine for the framing and skirting, and Sapele for the deck. Everything was primed 5 sides with oil based primer. I only recorded the first coat of paint, so don’t flame my finish! No voice over because I think the construction noises are more pleasant. Enjoy!

I’ve been asked many times why I don’t bed glass with silicone. It’s the same reason I don’t wash my hair with Lysol. It’s the wrong stuff for the wrong application! Do yourself a favor: use what has been proven to work since the Renaissance, and that’s linseed oil putty. Not stuff from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Real putty. I use Austin’s Glaziers Putty from The Craftsman Blog - Scott Sidler or Sarco M from Atlas Preservation You cannot go wrong with these products. Have a great weekend!

Had issues with earlier post. I’m a firm believer in studying the past. Doing so gives me a working catalogue of solutions I can apply to all the weird problems I encounter out in the field. It turns out that carpenters way smarter than I solved all these problems long ago. Miter clamps from Casing from

I hired an apprentice—not a helper! His name is Philip Swanson. He was a timber framer in VA, so he brings a lot to the table. There are no apprenticeship programs down here. Like nothing. I started out as a “helper” for some residential contractors a few years ago. I had to constantly ask the more experienced guys to teach me something—anything! It was like they were gate keeping their knowledge/experience. I only edited that for about 3 months and then I decided to go out on my own. My business is growing quickly, and hiring someone full time is long overdue. It’s been awesome. I am intentional about not treating him like a “helper.” I’m curious if yall have had similar experiences. Share below! Stick around for the end! It will BLOW YOUR MIND! What do you do when the base elevation is higher than the bottom of your drawers? In other words, when you drawers keep hitting your baseboard. Hire a trim carpenter to do a bunch of math and fix it! I can do a more detailed video on how to do this if y’all are interested. Let me know below! A difficult job made easy by Titebond III and Collins Clamps link in my bio for the clamps
