Our libraries are more than buildings. They are places where children learn, families grow, and communities stay connected. I’m proud to help bring resources back home that support programs and services for the people we serve.

Serving this community has always been about delivering real results where they matter most.

📚✨Mobile Public Library is overjoyed to celebrate Happy National Library Week with a special visit from Alabama Legislator Rep. Sam Jones. who stopped by the Virginia Dillard Smith Branch of the Mobile Public Library to drop off a check to Director Jurée Hall for $10,000 for programs for the community. Rep. Jones made a second stop, visiting the Semmes Library and delivering additional support funds for $5,000 for programs to Ms. Veronica McCoo, Lead Public Services Administrator.

Funds shared with MPL are from the Alabama Legislative Community Service Grant Program, which allows state legislators to direct state funds to non-profits, schools, and local government entities for public-facing projects.

Honored to join the Port City Chapter of Blacks in Government for the 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Breakfast.

On this MLK Day, it was powerful to be in the room reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy under the theme “Now Is the Time: Realizing the Promise of Democracy.”

Meaningful moments like this remind us how far we’ve come—and how important it is to keep building what’s next. From my journey as Mobile’s first Black mayor to continuing to serve in the Alabama Legislature, it was especially encouraging to share this space with leaders who are making history in their own right, including Congressman Shomari Figures, whose leadership represents the next chapter of progress and possibility.

This is what full circle looks like—honoring the shoulders we stand on while preparing the path ahead. The promise of democracy is alive, and the work continues.
