The Mitchell Police Department is proud to recognize six individuals who recently received awards for their extraordinary bravery and selfless actions during a tragic motor vehicle crash that occurred on April 29th, 2026.

Those honored were Officer Shanden Reiners, Officer Garrett Douglas, Davison County Deputy Kohl Oster, Davison County Deputy Kyle Bice, and citizens Anthony Reimnitz and RJ Munson. Their courage, quick thinking, and willingness to act in the face of danger exemplified the very best of public service and community spirit.

Alongside the efforts of many other first responders who responded that day, these individuals demonstrated remarkable bravery, professionalism, and compassion during an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking incident. Their actions reflect the commitment to helping others, regardless of the personal risks involved.

While the circumstances of this crash were tragic, the response from those on scene serves as a powerful reminder of the character, dedication, and selflessness that exist throughout our community and among our emergency responders.

🏍️ Electric Motorcycle Safety & Legal Reminder

Electric motorcycles such as Sur-Ron and Talaria bikes have grown in popularity in recent years. While they may look different from traditional motorcycles, they are considered motor vehicles under South Dakota law and must comply with all applicable traffic laws.

Operators must:
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Maintain liability insurance
• Maintain valid state registration
• Wear approved eye protection
• Wear a helmet if under 18 years of age
• Be equipped with appropriate lighting

These vehicles may not be operated on sidewalks, over curbs, through business lawns, or in other areas not intended for motor vehicle traffic. They are required to follow the same rules of the road as any other motor vehicle.

We have observed riders operating these vehicles in ways that create safety concerns and violate state law. Parents should understand that these are not toys and are not intended to be ridden freely throughout the city without regard for traffic laws. Electric motorcycles carry the same responsibilities as traditional motorcycles.

Before purchasing or allowing a child to operate one of these vehicles, please take the time to understand the legal requirements and safe operating practices.

Our goal is education and safety for everyone using our streets, sidewalks, and public spaces.

Parents and guardians should:

✔ Know what games their children are playing
✔ Review privacy and chat settings
✔ Discuss safe online behavior
✔ Encourage children to report concerning interactions

The best online safety tool is ongoing communication. Ask your child about their favorite games and who they interact with online.

Online safety starts with a conversation. Take time this month to talk with your children about social media, gaming, privacy settings, and safe online behavior.

🚌 Longfellow Elementary School Zone Reminder

The Longfellow Elementary School Zone is active, and the school zone lights will be flashing during the following times:

🕢 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM
🕛 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
🕞 3:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Please slow down, stay alert, and watch for students, parents, and staff in the area. Your attention and patience help keep everyone safe.

These school zone hours will remain in effect throughout the summer, so please continue to plan accordingly when traveling through the area.
