Egg Tempera on Birch Panel

This painting and others will be on display at https://openbookmn.org/ tonight from 5pm-8pm.

Marley wrote a little about each painting that appeared in his book "For Now". None of this writing has been published before, but we share this one today in celebration of his new book, "Marley Kaul - Paintings".

As It Happens:

One day I received, from a friend, a bouquet of garden flowers. I placed them on a small table in front of me. Sometimes when I meditate on something like this...my mind wanders. On this occasion my focus did not deviate. It was later in the afternoon, the sun was warm, the colors were brilliant. I began to draw the flower shapes, allowing expansion of each shape to interlock and even dance a bit. I built a ring around it like an after image in your eyes, to give the flowers presence. A table form to stabilize and create a place and rhythms in the vase and table to balance the upper and lower parts of the composition. This painting was done by an artist who understood balance, rhythm and color. It wasn't done by me, but by an artists intuition. I felt like l as an observer watching it come together. This cannot be explained...it was everything I know used to complete this meditative work.
