My beloved city is under attack. Armed, masked paramilitaries in unmarked vehicles rove my neighborhood beating down anyone they please. All because we had the audacity to show compassion and support for new arrivals to this county.

I didn’t know Renee and it’s sad to think I never will. Might we have met at a block party? Or maybe our neighborhood farmers market? I didn’t know Renee but I am so proud to call her neighbor.

Although I no longer recognize my country, I recognize Renee’s spirit.
