Saturday Night. Celebrate the opening of Grover Hogan: True Stories.

As is tradition, we invite our community to shower the artist with support, presence, and energy as we present their first solo body of work in the gallery through mid-November.

Saturday, October 3. What to expect:

6–7 PM · Sensory-Friendly Hour
A quieter, reduced-sensory hour for visitors who benefit from a more accessible gallery environment.
Masks are required during this hour and will be available, and the gallery will be free of amplified sound and music.

7–10 PM · Opening Reception
Beginning at 7 PM, the opening will transition into our full reception. Enjoy a DJ set by DJ D Minor.
All are welcome throughout the evening.

Refreshments will be available.

Grover Hogan (they/them) is an American interdisciplinary artist, educator, and oracle from Houston, TX, currently based in Minneapolis, MN. 

Hogan’s artistic practice spans experimental drawing and painting, social practice, critical theory, ritual making, and ruminating. They are most known for their self-portraiture and confessional-style art. 

Their work has been exhibited in Texas and Minnesota, including CLUES Gallery of St. Paul, Mardag Gallery at Franconia Sculpture Garden, Rondo Community Land Trust, and The Jung Center of Houston. Their art and writing have been featured in publications such as Teen Vogue, Houstonia Magazine, MN Women’s Press, and Burn Something Zine. As a muralist, they have worked with Forecast Public Art, Creatives after Curfew, The Bush Foundation, The Cedar Cultural Center, and Midtown Global Market, and their murals can be found throughout the Twin Cities.

Hogan was an artist-in-residence at Public Functionary’s (PF) Studio 400 Incubator Program (‘23-’25) and has continued to remain a studio artist within PF since concluding their residency. They received their BFA in Fine Arts with a minor in Teaching Art from Minneapolis College of Art and Design (’21), and they were baptized in a mega church swimming pool (‘13).

They are currently a studio artist at Public Functionary and a 2025/26 Jerome Fellow.

GROVER HOGAN: TRUE STORIES

Join us for an opening celebration with the artist at Public Functionary on Saturday, Oct 3, 6pm-10pm

Presenting colorful, bold mixed-media artifacts, paintings, and altars, True Stories is the first solo exhibition by American artist, educator, and oracle Grover Hogan. Since early 2025, Hogan has studied Tarot’s major arcana, dedicating around one month to embodying each sequential card. This Fool’s Journey has culminated in an interdisciplinary artistic practice of self-reflection and growth.

Through emotional honesty, self-portraiture, and play, True Stories asks the audience to get vulnerable together; to take inspiration from the artist’s messy, weird, little life, and to learn and explore from the stories being told within each work.

Within Reach explored the power of imagination, art-making, and collective action in shaping more just and joyful futures.

Nine PF Studios artists and alumni came together to imagine world-building as a fluid practice—one rooted in everyday choices, relationships, and acts of making. Like water, art can nourish, heal, and patiently reshape the landscapes we inhabit, its force emerging through steady movement, accumulation, and time.

Together, these works challenge dominant narratives and create space for new ways of seeing ourselves and one another. The future is not predetermined; it is something we create together.
