I am like the ocean; crushed rosemary between your fingertips; the smell of a lemon tree. What is the gender of these things?

I choose to believe that before my ancestors invented the gender binary to use as a tool of violence, they had language for people like me, people like us. Before we were colonizers, we were indigenous to somewhere; before we colonized ourselves we loved ourselves. And expansive genders are as old as the land.

But I don’t know those words. So for now I have a label to describe that which I am not, and a pronoun that describes me as more than one. An identity that betrays its own grief, for all that’s been forgotten.

If you really could see me, the way I take care of people, the way I sing and laugh, you’d see the masculine and the feminine, and so much more in between. It took a long time for me to name these parts of me, but now I know there is power in naming.
