When we hired Stephen Martinez nearly 2 years ago, we knew our ask was on the verge of impossible: 1) we want to be more than “just a mud company” and 2) help us engineer a drilling fluid system that is environmentally friendly with performance that matches or exceeds oil-based mud. There was a catch. First, all the key inputs for the fluid system had to be sourced from agriculture; for the system to be “carbon negative” before it hit the drilling rig. Second, we wanted chemistry that was good for the earth; in other words, let’s leave things better than we found them. Third, we need to offer a level of drilling engineering analysis that no other fluids provider can.

Less than 2 years later, with Stephen’s expertise and guidance, we accomplished our goal. But wait, there’s more. We also gained the insight and mentorship of someone we believe to be one of the sharpest engineers in the business. Our company is forever changed because of his insight, leadership, character, and talent.

Stephen, thank you for your willingness to give a “mud company” a chance to be something more and a chance to grow and learn and evolve. Thank you for teaching us new things. Thank you for guiding us through a really challenging period.

Although we can’t give Kaylea Evans all the credit for this quote, we can give her credit for doing lots of heavy lifting as the Manager of HMC Fluids and Engineering’s Field Office! Kaylea loves spending time at the gym and trains as a power lifter, but we’re talking about a different kind of heavy lifting. We’re talking about lifting up peoples’ spirits, raising the bar of expectations, and elevating the performance of her staff. When you love your job, take pride in what you do, and have the right attitude, as Kaylea says and does, the heavy lifting isn’t so heavy anymore. “You train yourself for success in the gym by putting in the work, and the same applies in our professional lives. Work Hard. Lift Heavy”. With a passion for the outdoors and her family, you’ll find Kaylea on the softball field, coaching her daughters, and helping others succeed. In support of Be The Change Permian Basin, team “HMC Hammer” from HMC Fluids and Engineering, competed the Texas Warrior Mudout on Saturday, October 15, 2022! Be the Change is a non-profit organization committed to bringing healing, hope, and connection to the teens of the Permian Basin Region. Through its impactful and powerful programs Be the Change seeks to bring greater social and emotional development skills to the youth it services. Offering an opportunity for community, teamwork, and facing adversity head-on, the Texas Warrior Mudout is a 3.1-mile, obstacle course-based challenge that benefits Be The Change and aligns with its iMpower program goals of reinforcing self-worth, effective communication, relationship development, and making healthy life decisions.
