Pet behavior and Holiday Guests ๐๐๐ถ๐ถ๐๐
Part two of this week's series about pet ownership during the holidays brings us to the topic about visiting families and guests.
Though the excitement of a party may overwhelm some pets, keep your pets inside during cold weather and provide plenty of toys to keep them busy.
Itโs not uncommon for holiday festivities to cause pet anxiety, which can lead to behavioral issues that can be disruptive to your celebrations at best. But you can prepare your pup beforehand by teaching good dog etiquette to help avoid bad dog behavior.
When preparing your family for the festivities this year, use these dog etiquette tips to make holidays with dogs more enjoyable for everyone.
Dog Etiquette Goes Both Ways
If family or friends are coming to visit, communicate any rules ahead of time. Itโs important that your guests know you have pets and that theyโll need to be mindful. Inform guests of your pet, so that theyโre careful when coming and going.
While we would like to believe these rules go without saying, chocolate is one food that is common during the holidays, and is toxic for dogs. Inform guests not to feed your dog any food or participate in any unruly behavior.
If needed, provide your cat or dog with a quiet room or crate during holiday parties and/or prepare ahead of time to discourage barking.
Stay tuned for our next post about pet travel โ๐๐
Happy holidays Fetch Fans!
This week we will have a series of posts to help with pet ownership during the holidays.
๐๐๐Holiday decorations and pets ๐๐๐
Christmas trees and holiday greens: Make sure your dogs or cats do not chew on limbs or droppings from the tree. Ingested pine needles could get lodged in the intestinal tract, puncturing the lining or bunching together and causing an intestinal obstruction.
Water base: The water base of a Christmas tree may contain dangerous chemicals that could harm your pet.
Christmas lights and tinsel: Position your tree's lights and tinsel away from the bottom of the tree where pets can reach them. Some pets climb up or into trees and can even knock them over.
Candles: Donโt leave candles unattended. Pets may accidentally knock them over and spill wax or start a fire.
Firestarter logs: Dogs that enjoy chewing should steer clear; these logs contain sawdust and paraffin which can cause an irritated stomach or even intestinal blockage when ingested.
Plants: A number of seasonal plants are poisonous to pets if nibbled or eaten, including ivy, holly, mistletoe and poinsettias.
Lastly, in case of emergency, identify your closest 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic before an emergency occurs.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's post on Pet Behavior and Holiday Guests!

Hi, everyone! It's Sugar, and since it's National Take Your Dog to Work day, I've taken over Fetch Financial's social media page! Things on my agenda today - order treats, nap, and get lots of belly rubs! ๐
Are you working from home with your pet? Or maybe your office lets you bring your furry friend to work with you? Here are a few must-haves for me at the Fetch Financial office:
- My special chair that I love to nap on. Make sure your pet has a bed or blanket that they can relax on.
- Squeaky toys are a definite no-no so I don't interrupt any important calls, but chew toys, especially ones with treats, are my favorite! (Frozen Kong with peanut butter anyone?)
- After all that peanut butter, water is a must! Don't forget a bowl and maybe a towel or place mat to keep the floor dry.
Studies show that having your dog at work with you can increase overall productivity, joyfulness, and health! It's definitely harder to be stressed when your best furry friend is with you.

Today is the longest day of the year, AKA the Summer Solstice! But did you know it's only the longest day of the year for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere? In the Southern Hemisphere, it's the shortest day of the year! ๐
And depending on what time zone you are in, your Summer Solstice may be as early as June 20 or as late as June 22! The reason for the variation is that our calendar doesn't exactly match the length of the tropical year, which is the time is takes the Earth to complete it's orbit around the Sun. Our Gregorian calendar has 365 days in a common year and 366 in a leap year, but it takes the Earth 365.242199 days to orbit the Sun. So, the timing of the equinoxes and solstices slowly drifts apart on the Gregorian calendar, causing the solstice to happen approximately 6 hours later each year. Eventually, the accumulated lag becomes so significant that there is a need to realign the Gregorian calendar with the tropical year, hence a leap day happening nearly every four years. ๐

Itโs ! We love snuggling on the sofa with our pup, watching a good movie, and enjoying lots of popcorn! ๐ฟ Some of the movies our pets love to watch are Secret Life of Pets, Air Bud, and of course, Up! Make sure your pupโs popcorn is air-popped with no toppings, and only a small amount! They probably donโt care about the treats as long as they are sitting next to you anyway!
