In the Central Valley, that title of promotora, for example, translates to the work of helping someone affected by cancer understand where to turn for care, connecting a pregnant woman with diapers or food, or helping a family find counseling, health care or another service.
Promotoras don’t all do the same work. Their training and experience can vary across healthcare, education, mental health and other community needs. Some develop deeper knowledge than others in certain topics.

During an academic senate meeting last month, multiple Merced College faculty members voiced concern over rising tensions on campus and within administration, and called for peace.
The senate meeting on Aug. 27 was the first one of the new semester. The body meets again on Thursday. More than 10 academic senators and employees from the college stood up at the last meeting to speak during public comment about charged interactions between faculty and administration that began in March.

Passionate. Goofy. Loved. These were the words people used to describe Brittney Harris during a vigil Sunday evening in front of the Lesher Student Services Center at Merced College.
A week prior on Aug. 30, Harris, 38, was shot and killed in a Denny’s parking lot in Madera. Her estranged husband, David Moreno, 51, is accused of killing Harris. Moreno pleaded not guilty to murder charges at a court hearing last week. He remains in custody with no bond set, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
Harris’ death has prompted widespread discussions online and among community officials about domestic violence awareness in the San Joaquin Valley.
