We help girls who face barriers in Memphis grow into strong, confident leaders. www.beautyinmefdn.org

We use the everyday act of self-care, starting in the hair salon chair, to teach them that they are worthy, capable, and loved.

By age 3, children are already forming snap judgments about people's character just from looking at their face. And here's the uncomfortable part: adults do it too, to kids. Research shows children perceived as having a "nicer" looking face get treated more positively by adults, more patience, more warmth, more benefit of the doubt. (Source: Cogsdill et al., Harvard University; ScienceDirect developmental psychology research)

Let that sit for a second. A child can be judged before she's said a single word.

This is exactly why we don't treat the chair as just about looking good. We treat it as leveling a playing field that was never fair to begin with. When a girl feels put-together and confident in how she shows up, she's not just feeling good, she's changing how the world responds to her before she even opens her mouth.

That's not shallow. That's survival wisdom passed down for generations, dressed up as a hair appointment.

Our girls deserve every advantage the world already hands out for free to someone else. We're just making sure they get theirs.

Today is the day, Memphis! It's officially 901 Day! 🧡🖤

This city has a way of turning pride into culture, music born on Beale Street, food nobody else can replicate, and a spirit that shows up for its own no matter what.

Beauty In Me Foundation is proud to be part of this city's story. Every girl in our program is a daughter of the 901, growing up in a city that's given the world music legends, culture, and grit, and she's carrying that same Memphis spirit forward.

Today, as the whole city celebrates everything that makes Memphis home, we're celebrating something specific too: the girls who are Memphis's next generation of artists, leaders, and dreamers.

901 isn't just an area code. It's a family. And every girl we mentor is proof that this city keeps producing greatness.

Get out and celebrate our city today. Support local. Show love to the 901. Grab a $9.01 deal somewhere and toast to Memphis.

This is our city. This is our day. 🧡

Today is National Thoughtful Day, a day built around one simple idea: be aware of what someone else might need, and act on it.

It doesn't take money or a grand gesture. Sometimes thoughtfulness looks like noticing a girl who's been unusually quiet and sitting beside her without being asked. A text checking on a friend who seems overwhelmed. Saving someone a seat. Remembering a small detail about someone's day and asking about it later.

We try to build this into our girls early: confidence isn't only about believing in yourself, it's also about paying attention to others. A thoughtful girl grows into a thoughtful woman, and thoughtful women change the rooms they walk into.

So today, notice someone. Really notice them. What do they need that they haven't asked for out loud?

Small thoughtfulness, given often, adds up to a life that makes people feel seen.

Today is Women's Equality Day, marking the anniversary of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which secured women's right to vote.

It's worth telling the full truth on a day like today: that amendment didn't reach every woman equally. Full voting access for many women of color, including Black women, wasn't truly secured until the Voting Rights Act of 1965, decades later. Real equality has always come in layers, and it's still being built today.

That history matters to us. Every girl in our program is inheriting a legacy of women who kept fighting even when the first "win" didn't fully include them, women who refused to stop until equality meant everyone.

So today, we're not just celebrating a date on a calendar. We're honoring every woman who pushed further, spoke louder, and refused to settle for partial progress.

To our girls: your voice, your vote, and your future were paid for by women who never stopped pushing forward. Carry that forward.

Equality isn't finished. But it's worth continuing to fight for, together.

Today is National Senior Citizens Day, and this actually connects beautifully, generational wisdom is a huge part of your mission's roots. Here's your post.

Today is National Senior Citizens Day, a day to honor the wisdom, sacrifice, and quiet strength of our elders.

This one means something deep to us. So much of what we teach in the chair, self-respect, resilience, the value of showing up for your community, didn't start with us. It was handed down. Grandmothers who braided their granddaughters' hair while sharing life lessons. Mothers who learned from their mothers. A whole legacy of Black women passing down beauty, strength, and wisdom, one generation at a time.

Every girl in our program is standing on the shoulders of women who came before her, women who may never see a headline or a stat about them, but whose fingerprints are all over who we are today.

So today, call your grandmother. Visit an elder in your family or your church. Ask them a question and actually listen to the answer.

Their wisdom is a gift. Let's make sure it isn't a forgotten one.

August is Black Business Month, a time to recognize and support Black-owned businesses across the country.

This one matters to us directly. Every time we partner with a Black-owned beauty supply store, a local Black stylist, or a Black-owned print shop for our journals and flyers, we're doing more than getting supplies. We're keeping resources circulating inside our own community, strengthening the very neighborhoods our girls come from.

Supporting Black businesses isn't just about pride, it's about power. Every dollar spent at a Black-owned business is a dollar reinvested in jobs, mentorship, and opportunity for the next generation, the same next generation we mentor every session.

So this month, we're making a commitment: to shop Black-owned when we can, to partner with Black-owned businesses for our events, and to encourage our community to do the same.

Who's your favorite Black-owned business in Memphis? Drop it in the comments, let's support each other. 👇🏽

Today is World Humanitarian Day, a day the United Nations set aside to honor people who dedicate themselves to helping others, often in the hardest circumstances imaginable.

You don't have to work in a disaster zone to be a humanitarian. Humanitarian work happens anywhere someone chooses another person's wellbeing over their own convenience.

It happens when a mentor gives up her Saturday to sit with a girl who's had a hard week. It happens when a stylist donates her time and skill so a child can walk into school with her head held high. It happens when a stranger sees a struggling family and simply chooses to help.

Today, we're honoring every person who has ever shown up for someone else, not because they had to, but because they couldn't imagine not.

To our volunteers, our mentors, our donors: you are humanitarians too. Thank you for choosing to show up for Memphis girls, again and again.

The world changes because ordinary people choose extraordinary compassion. Be one of them.

Today is National Nonprofit Day, a day set aside to recognize the volunteers, donors, and organizations working to change lives in their communities.

So today, we want to flip the spotlight for a moment, off of us, and onto you.

To every donor who's given, big or small. To every volunteer who's washed, styled, served, or shown up. To every business that donated supplies. To every parent who trusted us with their daughter. To Christy, to Tarsha, to every mentor who's poured into a girl this year, thank you.

Nonprofits don't run on good intentions alone. They run on real people choosing, again and again, to show up for something bigger than themselves. That's you.

Beauty In Me Foundation exists because a community decided Memphis girls were worth investing in. Today, we're honoring that community, all of you.

If you've never given, volunteered, or shared our page before, today's a great day to start. And if you already have, we see you, and we're endlessly grateful.

Research on youth mentoring has found something specific: mentoring relationships show the strongest positive effects when they last 12 months or longer. Shorter relationships show far smaller benefits, and relationships that end early can sometimes do more harm than good. (Source: Big Brothers Big Sisters research, Journal of Youth Development)

That's exactly why Beauty In Me Academy is built the way it is, a full 12 months, not a one-time event.

We didn't design our program to be a quick feel-good moment. We designed it to be a real, sustained relationship, one that gives a girl enough time to actually trust her mentor, open up, and let real growth take root.

Consistency isn't just a nice idea. It's the difference between a program that looks good and a program that actually changes a life.

To every mentor showing up month after month, even on the days it feels like just routine, you're doing exactly what the research says matters most. Keep showing up.

Today is National Authenticity Day, a day built around one simple idea: show up as your real self, not a performance of who you think you should be.

That message means everything to us.

So many of our girls grow up feeling like they have to shrink themselves, change who they are, or hide parts of themselves just to feel accepted somewhere. Part of what happens in our chair every session is the opposite of that. We tell them: you don't have to perform. You don't have to be smaller, quieter, or different to be worthy of love and respect.

Real confidence isn't about becoming someone impressive. It's about becoming fully, unapologetically yourself, and realizing that's already enough.

So today, we're celebrating every girl learning that lesson, and every adult still learning it too. Drop the mask. Speak in your real voice. Show up as you.

Authentic beats perfect, every single time.
