to my children & all who love me
the high holidays are approaching & it’s time to think about the year that was & pray for the next year to come
🙏🏼
thinking of all the tremendous loss i have known
&
viewing how people choose to react to grief has taught me invaluable lessons
🖤
i pray my loved ones:
🌟love & respect me while i am alive (which i hope shall continue for many decades!)
🌟live & thrive in my abscence knowing they did their best to make me feel welcomed & included in their lives
🌟remember & continue to honour the values i shared
🌟find joy in the mundane as well as the obvious

yesterday we celebrated a special birthday
i overheard my father-in-law mention the legacy he (& mom) have created from what began, for him, as an only child
to list ALL the loss this family has endured is painful and much too plentiful
i would rather think of the welcome offered to each new member whether they stay for a lifetime or just roll thru for a visit
it is a pleasure to have a seat at the family table as we continue to grow and accept what life throws our way with open hearts & a welcoming spirit

i was once again treated to an outpouring of love and support. this reminds me of the incredible impact my late husband had on so many people in this world. i am so very honoured to have been loved by someone so special
it was a particularly difficult day this year filled with deep mature thoughts about loss and life - many issues raised by my adult children
it’s also my first time experiencing this day from the vantage point of a married woman. being married to a widower helps me because i can discuss many unique emotions with someone who also understands and relates. most importantly, he is a wonderful, insightful, honest, caring and mature man
there is no doubt the world is different for all without neil and yet, after listening again to this conversation between two men who have also suffered multiple loss, i think i now understand what colbert is trying to explain
his thoughts remind me of the brilliant verse from leonard cohen’s 1992 song, anthem,
“Ring the bells that still can ring / Forget your perfect offering / There is a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in.”
suffering is a rite of life
how we choose to define our loss and approach life is key - are we able to create new family dynamics with true appreciation and acceptance;
do we become more empathetic, kind and appreciative;
or
do we wallow in our emotional pain and refuse to find the light?
for me, i have chosen to learn from my many losses and the incredible role modelling my in-laws provide. i believe my losses have led me to seek greater appreciation, beauty and joy in life while it has also reaffirmed my personal strength and self-respect
do i expect life to be the same as it was? no!
but i also suspect that i can make it even better thru my growth and appreciation of the light
&
a tremendous amount of work
i vow to (continue to try) and open my eyes and heart with strength, resilience and thankfulness
i pray those whom i love can find it in their hearts to join me on this ride - never perfect but always trying to find the light

perhaps we are witnessing the secret to a long & fulfilled life - be open to new love & welcome change
here’s a TRUE story of a now 97-year old widow who was blessed to meet a 101-year old man and his wife when she reluctantly moved into her retirement home
a few years later, he became a widower and my mom and jack have subsequently chosen to become a couple
for over 5 years now, they enjoy one another watching tv, going on walks, overcoming sickness, having dinners and entertaining their large and loving respective families who have welcomed this new chapter in their parent’s life with tremendous thanks and appreciation for all the happiness and company they provide one-another
i am so honoured to join jack at his 101-year old birthday party this week

11 years
a very long time without YOU
loss is natural but also unimaginable
thankfully the initial emotions including loneliness, anguish and pain have dissipated over time
40 years together will never be forgotten. the memories continue to flood and i hope they never fade
i have SURVIVED thanks to the continued love & support of friends and family
&
after many years of growth and acceptance, i have chosen to continue LIVING life to the fullest with no guilt or remorse
once again, i thank my friends & family for their support in this next chapter of my life
i intend to integrate our treasured past with the gift of a full, continuing life blessed with new love and thankful for the future that awaits
forever in my heart

As I prepare for passover AND shabbat, it is not lost on me how blessed I am
While I prepare to sit at the passover table this year amidst my family (some new and some more recent gifts), I vow to give thanks for all I have AND to be mindful of the hostages
There is no mistaking or pretending - we know, without a doubt, the tragedy they continue to endure
These mixed emotions are so common for us - to celebrate life while being reminded of grief, pain and loss
Still I shall HOPE...
Wishing all who celebrate shabbat shalom & chag sameach
