More clients are asking what's in their haircolor. Are you confident in you answer?
Traditional haircolor formulas often rely on glycols derived from petroleum. These ingredients are commonly used as humectants, solvents, and carriers to help distribute ingredients throughout the formula and support moisture retention. While widely used throughout the beauty industry, petroleum-derived glycols come from a non-renewable resource and may vary in their sensory feel and irritation potential depending on the formulation.
We believed there was a better way. That's why we became the first haircolor company in the world to formulate with Zemea Propanediol, a 100% corn-derived, renewable alternative to petroleum-based glycols.
When developing our color system, we asked a simple question:
If a cleaner, more sustainable, high-performing alternative exists, why not use it?
That's why we chose
Zemea functions as an effective humectant, helping attract and retain moisture. This supports hair that feels softer, healthier, and better conditioned after the coloring process. For stylists, that means hair that not only looks beautiful when the service is complete, but continues to feel healthy afterward.
Because of its naturally derived origin and low irritation profile, Zemea helps support a more comfortable coloring experience for clients while aligning with our commitment to healthier formulations.
By replacing traditional petroleum-derived glycols with Zemea, we're able to utilize a renewable, plant-based ingredient without compromising professional performance. That's not just a change in ingredients, it's a different approach to formulating haircolor.
Sustainability isn't just about what's in the tube, it's also about how ingredients are produced. Compared to petroleum-derived propanediol, the production of Zemea uses:
Approximately 40% less energy
Approximately 20% fewer greenhouse gas emissions
A readily biodegradable profile according to OECD testing standards
Every formulation decision matters, and ingredient sourcing is one of the most impactful choices a manufacturer can make.
Zemea Propanediol is:
USDA Certified 100% Bio-Based
EcoCertโข Approved
Natural Products Association (NPA) Certified
EPA Design for the Environment Approved
When we say we're committed to clean, high-performance haircolor, we're talking about the details most brands never discuss. When clients ask what's in their haircolor, the answer should be one you feel proud to give.

Not all lightener additives are created equal. โจ
Most additives focus on one thing: bond protection. Lightener Control (LC) protects the bonds, helps maintain moisture, AND improves application control all in one formula.
While the hair is lifting, LC helps support strength and elasticity with proteins that attach to the hair structure, while humectants help keep the lightener hydrated for hours. The result? A more controlled lift with less stress on the hair.
But that's only part of the story.
LC's unique resin-based gel creates an ultra-smooth shield that helps prevent slipping during foils and balayage applications, giving stylists exceptional precision and control where it matters most.
โ Supports stronger, healthier-looking hair
โ Helps maintain elasticity during lightening
โ Rehydrates throughout processing
โ Promotes consistent, predictable lift
โ Helps defend against breakage
โ Delivers superior foil and balayage control
When your clients want maximum brightness, don't settle for an additive that only protects bonds. Choose the one that helps protect, hydrate, strengthen, and control the entire lightening service.
That's the LC difference.

Your color timer went off. But why are you rushing to the shampoo bowl? ๐
One of the most overlooked steps in professional haircolor isn't the formula, the developer, or the processing time. It's
After processing is complete, many stylists immediately rinse. But taking just a few extra minutes to properly emulsify can help refine, balance, and finalize the color before it's removed from the hair.
Emulsification is the controlled introduction of a small amount of cool water to the hair after processing, followed by gently massaging the color into a creamy lather. This simple step can make a significant difference in the final result.
As the color is emulsified, dye intermediates continue developing into larger, more stable color molecules within the cortex, helping maximize color development before rinsing.
Working the color throughout the hair helps redistribute pigment and blend transitional areas, creating a more seamless result.
The gradual introduction of water begins diluting the remaining alkaline mixture, allowing excess color and developer on the surface of the hair to rinse away more cleanly.
Proper emulsification helps ensure the color is fully developed and stabilized before removal, contributing to more consistent retention.
Emulsification is also your final opportunity to evaluate the color before rinsing. For porous mid-lengths and ends, applying Hair Proteinizer before pulling color through can help protect the hair, improve color retention, and support a more balanced result. If additional refinement is needed, having extra color mixed and ready allows you to make adjustments without rushing.
To emulsify correctly:
โ Add a small amount of cool water
โ Gently massage into a creamy lather
โ Work the color throughout the hair
โ Allow it to remain for approximately 5 minutes
โ Rinse thoroughly with tepid water
โ Finish with Colorsafe Conditioner
The difference between average color and exceptional color often isn't the formula. It's what happens in the final five minutes.

CPL is essentially a 5 volume developer. Think deposit-only with minimal lift. It is very similar to our Keratint (zero-lift) developer, but using CPL with cream color has that value of ammonia that slightly bumps the natural level, so some stylists prefer it for intensity and vibrancy.
Don't have Keratint on hand? You can use our permanent color with CPL for a toner. We offer 2 options to pick from - one with a warmer base and another with a blue base. Mix our color with the 5 volume developer and let it vaporize for 15 minutes before application.
With a color correction, letโs say you need to lift out a little bit of undertone or residual color midshaft to the ends, like color fade out or a toner that grew out to an unwanted color. Lightener isnโt an option due to porosity. So, this is where CPL is the perfect tool mixed with cream color to gently lift out that unwanted cast or tone.
Oh, and you can also mix CPL with lightener for slight lift as a less-aggressive option! โจ

The โglass hairโ trend is having a major moment right now. Ultra-reflective shine. Sleek finishes. Mirror-like results. But as this trend grows, itโs worth asking: Is all โglass hairโ actually healthy hairโฆ or are we sometimes just seeing the illusion of health? ๐
A lot of products can create temporary shine by coating the hair shaft with silicones and waxes, which creates heavy buildup. The hair looks glossy, but underneath it may still be dehydrated, over-processed, porous, or fragile.
True shine isnโt applied, itโs a reflection of the hairโs condition.
When hair is truly healthy, the cuticle lays flatter and reflects light more evenly. That kind of luminosity typically comes from a combination of:
- balanced moisture levels
- healthy color practices
- ingredient quality
- cuticle integrity
- protein/moisture balance
So how do we suggest both instant radiance and long-term hair health and manageability?
Keratint Clear: Did someone say glazed donut?
Shine+ Serum and Gloss Mist: Ginkgo helps instantly hydrate and revive damaged or over-processed hair to reduce frizz and flyaways while improving softness and shine. Avocado Oil delivers moisture-rich lipids that help smooth the hair fiber and create a luminous, glossy finish without leaving the hair feeling heavy or coated.
For us, iโs not just perception. Itโs actually healthy hair. ๐
