Cheney Homestead Museum
Ancestral home of the Cheney family, c. 1785 & donated to the Manchester (CT) Historical Society Timothy died in 1795, leaving the house to George.
Timothy Cheney; farmer, miller & clock maker built the Cheney Homestead c. 1785. A nearby brook provided water to a grist mill, operated together with his son, George. He raised nine children with his wife Electa, in the house that would later be called "The Homestead" by generations of Cheneys. Two of George's children, John & Seth became artists: well-known for their unique skills, and funded their brothers Charles, Ward, Rush & Frank's business venture and creation of the Cheney Silk Mills.

In 2021, the Cheney Homestead was gifted a videotape of Cheney family home videos from the 1920s. Recently, we were able to convert the recording to a digital format. The compilation includes recordings of various family events in Manchester as well as other locations that the family traveled to in the very early 20th century. One event of particular note in the video are scenes from the wedding of famous pediatrician and author Benjamin Spock, who married Jane Cheney in 1927.

On Wednesday morning (6/7/23), we were made aware that during the school tour at the Cheney Homestead Museum, the guide made remarks that were objectionable as well as offensive. For that, we apologize both to the community as well as to the guests who were visiting the museum. To date, we have addressed the situation in the following ways: The tour guide responsible for the educational presentation has been suspended pending further investigation. We have met with a representative from the Manchester Public School system and anticipate a follow-up meeting this week that will hopefully provide some degree of closure. We are deeply regretful that members of our community have been hurt and insulted. We of the Manchester Historical Society deeply regret the incident. We hope all parties offended will accept the Society's apology.
