That rust?

It didn’t come from the heat!

HVAC is for Temperature.
Dehumidifiers are for RH.

Your storage facility isn’t climate-controlled unless you directly control both temperature and humidity!

Every corroded teapot, warped dresser, or moldy box started with a small oversight:
You didn’t manage the humidity.

Don’t wait for your next bad review to start protecting your facility.

Not sure if your system is pulling its weight against moisture?

Is It Really Climate-Controlled?
Why Self-Storage Needs to Rethink the Term
Let’s be honest—“climate-controlled” has become one of the most overused and underdefined buzzwords in the self-storage industry.

Search any facility’s website, and chances are you’ll see the term tossed around without much clarity. In many cases, it just means “we have air conditioning.” But is that really climate control?

Not if you’re serious about protecting your tenants’ stored property.

Why Definitions Matter
The problem isn’t just semantics—it’s real-world consequences. Tenants assume climate control protects against all environmental risks: heat, cold, moisture, and mold. But the reality?

A facility with only temperature control is not climate-controlled.

So What Is Climate Control, Really?
Let’s look at the basics.

Merriam-Webster defines climate control as:

“Having or providing artificial control of air movement, temperature, and humidity.”

ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) reinforces this in their standards—although their definitions are geared toward human-occupied buildings.

The key difference is that the self-storage industry has no standard of its own.

We’ve seen it time and again: overcooled spaces with 80%+ relative humidity that ruin furniture, clothing, electronics, and more. Mold doesn’t care if your thermostat says 72°F. Once humidity climbs above 55%, your tenants' items are at risk.

That’s why a true climate-controlled storage facility must include dehumidification as a core part of its system design—not just an afterthought.

Why This Matters for Owners:
Some large storage brands play fast and loose with the term “climate control.” They rely on temperature control alone, quietly skipping humidity-

Don’t follow this path. In fact, it is your opportunity to stand out.
