Chautauqua Opera Company workshops: Anne of Green Gables and Sarah in the Theatre - Chautauqua Institution 05/06/2026

Voyagers have an opportunity this summer to preview a new opera! Commissioned by , Mark Adamo, Music’s Sarah in the Theatre is a fantasy on the life and work of pioneering opera conductor, stage director, and impresario Sarah Caldwell.

At Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua Opera Company’s 16 young artists will sing all principal and ensemble roles in the first piano-vocal workshop of the opera’s second act. Following a reading of the complete act, the two-week workshop concludes with a public presentation of excerpts and conversation with the composer-librettist. The Chautauqua audience — which saw Adamo’s first opera, Little Women, in 2002 — will have a special window into his work dramatizing the career of a true American trailblazer.

Ed Tapper reviews ’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Last Savage in the June 2026 issue of Opera Magazine with Opera News, writing, “For the Odyssey Opera presentation, partnering with Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP)… Eve Summer’s semi-staging employed only a few props, but the glitzy 1960s costumes of Brooke Stanton succeeded in setting the comic mood and evoking the period. The cast was uniformly excellent… The fine Odyssey chorus wore multiple hats — singing wonderfully, arranging props and taking on many bit parts. The conductor Gil Rose led a spirited, committed performance of this delightful operatic gem.”

Six years ago today, Gunther Schuller: The Fisherman and His Wife dropped on BMOP/sound. This world premiere recording captures the 2015 memorial performance of the family-friendly opera which presented in partnership with our friends at Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP).

John Updike’s libretto for this work — by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer, conductor, horn player, author, historian educator, publisher, and jazz musician Gunther Schuller — tells the story of a fisherman’s greedy wife who pushes him to ask for more and more favors from an enchanted fish he captured and released into the sea. When the wife finally demands too much, the fish takes away all it has granted and the couple returns to their simple home having learned a valuable lesson.

The widely celebrated recording—a “Best of 2020” pick by New York Arts Journal, the Boston Musical Intelligencer, and Textura—has The Arts Fuse heralding, “Bravo to Gil Rose and his devoted singers and players for bringing this major work out of undeserved obscurity. May its fame grow as big as a castle!” This fable makes a great opera introduction for young listeners of all ages.

There’s been much news about the lately, Voyagers. While has not *yet* programmed a space-based or Moon-centric opera, we can’t forget the role our planet’s only natural satellite played in our 2015 staging of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s quintessentially English opera, Sir John in Love. It’s beneath the Moon in the depths of Windsor Forest the exploits of the vain and boastful knight, Sir John Falstaff, are revealed — and reveled — in the grand tradition of Shakespearean comedy.

We look forward with delight when we’ll share the exciting plans we’re making. We’re glad you’re part of this adventure called Odyssey Opera.

At The Arts Fuse, Aaron Keebaugh praises “Odyssey Opera’s recent staging, in collaboration with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), of Menotti’s The Last Savage at the Huntington Avenue Theatre [as] a reminder of why the composer struck such a popular chord during the 20th century… ’s fine cast of singers delivered all the moments of lampoon with striking appeal… All told, The Last Savage delivered good tunes, a delightfully twisted story, and all-around cheer.” • https://artsfuse.org/326192/opera-review-odyssey-operas-the-last-savage-finds-wit-and-warmth-in-menottis-madcap-satire/
