*RECAP* from the Magnolia City Council Meeting

We attended Magnolia’s August City Council meeting to see what residents were talking about, what council was deciding, and what was happening behind the scenes.

The night included updates inside City Hall, a discussion over appointments to Magnolia’s economic development boards, confirmation that the city won’t renew its Flock camera contract, and residents stepping up during public comment to share seven different perspectives.

Today, the Players Theatre Company family mourns the loss of one of our own, founding member and former Artistic Director Joe Viser, who passed away on August 4, 2026.

For more than 50 years, Joe helped shape the heart and soul of our theatre. From joining The Little Theatre of Conroe in 1972 to leading the company as Artistic Director for 16 years, his vision, leadership, and unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on every stage we've called home.

Joe directed and appeared in countless productions, mentored generations of artists and volunteers, and inspired everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. His kindness, wisdom, and passion for storytelling built more than great theatre—they built a family.

While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a remarkable life devoted to the performing arts. Joe's legacy will live on in every performance, every standing ovation, and every person who steps onto our stage.

Please keep Joe's family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.

MoCO Commissioners Court: Deferment on Bonds after August 6th Meeting.

Montgomery County Commissioners Court met about possible bond propositions on the table for a new Justice Center, jail complex, and other facilities.

County Judge Mark Keough opened the courthouse discussion by saying it was time to stop “kicking the can down the road.”

But as questions piled up over cost, courtroom space, future growth, and the proposed site, the tone changed.

By the end of the discussion, none of the proposed bond measures moved forward. "We're moving too fast," Commissioner Riley said.

Now the bigger question is:

If the Montgomery County Commissioners eventually put a major bond before voters, what would you need to see before voting yes?

Dock Line Magazine attended the July 14 meeting, reviewed the available public records and contacted the mayor and every council member for comment.

A local small business owner says he spent months doing exactly what the City of Magnolia asked him to do.

He went through Planning & Zoning.
He changed his application.
He returned to City Council.

Then, after being told there was a path forward, three council members reportedly voted no.

The question isn't whether every rezoning request should be approved.

The question is whether every applicant deserves a clear, consistent, and transparent process.

If a business owner follows the city's direction, spends the time, pays the fees, attends the hearings, and still can't get a straight answer...

Southern Star Brewing Announces New Ownership and Reopening Weekend

A familiar Montgomery County business is preparing to welcome the community back.

Southern Star Brewing announced that the Conroe brewery is now operating under new ownership and management, describing the transition as a fresh beginning for the longtime local brand.

According to the Southern Star team, the taproom will reopen this weekend on Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, beginning at noon each day.

Guests can expect the return of several familiar favorites from the bar and kitchen, along with new additions from the incoming ownership team.

Southern Star has been part of the Conroe community for years, serving as a gathering place for local families, craft beer enthusiasts, live music fans, and community events. The reopening gives residents an opportunity to see what is returning, what is changing, and what the new leadership has planned for the future.

The brewery shared the following message with its customers:

“This isn’t the end, but a fresh new beginning.”

Magnolia City Council Meeting Recap

Tonight, the Magnolia City Council considered several items that generated significant public interest, including concerns surrounding the proposed Town Center and Walmart development.

Residents filled the chamber to voice their thoughts on growth, development, and the future of Magnolia. It was encouraging to see citizens engaged in the process and willing to speak on issues that will shape the community for years to come.

One of the evening’s most closely watched agenda items involved a rezoning request from a local business owner seeking to resolve long-standing issues with his property. The request was intended to help the business move forward and improve the site.

Council Members Buck Perino, Caleb Small, and Geoff Breyer voted against the rezoning request. Supporters of the measure believed it would have given a local small business owner the opportunity to improve his property and continue investing in Magnolia.

During the discussion, Mayor Chris Blair expressed disappointment that the council was unwilling to support a local small business owner while the city has approved or supported much larger development projects in recent years. While his comments were made in the context of this specific rezoning request, they highlighted what he viewed as an inconsistency in how development decisions are approached.

Another significant discussion focused on establishing a citizen-led Ethics Committee to develop and recommend ethics policies for Magnolia’s elected officials and city employees. Following the events surrounding the city’s former mayor, many residents believe strengthening ethics standards and increasing accountability should be a priority.

Councilman Geoff Breyer voted against moving forward with the proposal.

Whether residents agree or disagree with these votes, they deserve to know how their elected officials are representing them. Transparency begins with understanding not only the issues before the council, but also how each member votes.
