Kids transitioning to kid pitch or higher levels of their age group will have timing issues. The key is to make sure they get into their launch position (stride foot down and balanced or weight slightly shifted on back leg) as the ball is approaching the zone. Many kids stride late and find the ball too late and either freeze up or pull their head to catch up. It’s an easier adjustment to make in the short term as you relearn the rhythm needed to gain back your confidence. In this video you can see Bartolo Colón get into launch position early and even reset his stride foot because he too has to make an adjustment from the big leagues to Fastpitch softball but still jacked one out of the park. The words “Don’t swing at everything” can feel like “Don’t swing at anything.” Teach your players what a good pitch looks like and let them swing at everything that looks like a good pitch. Let them figure it out, don’t do it for them.

Bonus Baseball also does 🥎. 8U is a good age to get your swing locked down. A lot of casting and lunging forward to the ball at this age. Last night our girls put on a show with some hard hit fly balls and grounders. One girl even hit an Inside the park home-run! As you can see we warmed up with a whiffle ball bat and lite flite balls to take the weight of the bat out of their hands and focus on lower body movement and keeping the hands inside the ball. After a few cuts we move back to their bat and the muscle memory stays in place.
