The Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana is a large species of lizard that belongs to the Iguanidae family. They're characterized by their distinctive keeled scales on their long tails and a crest of long spines on their back. Here are some key facts about them 12:
• Physical Characteristics: They can grow up to 1.3-1.4 meters (4 feet 3 inches to 4 feet 7 inches) in length, with males being slightly larger than females. They have a base color of black with white or cream-colored markings.
• Habitat: Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguanas are found in eastern Mexico and parts of Central America, including seasonally-dry deciduous tropical forests and thorn forests. They're also found in rocky areas with crevices and nearby trees.
• Behavior: They're social animals, living in groups, and are skilled climbers. They're diurnal, meaning they're active during the day, and mate in the spring. Males display dominance and interest in females by head bobbing.
• Distribution: They're endemic to Mexico and can be found along the Pacific coast, but have become invasive in areas like Florida and southern Texas.
There are different species of Spiny-tailed Iguanas, including Ctenosaura pectinata and Ctenosaura acanthura, which may have slightly different characteristics and habitats
