The Psych NP Collaborative empowers Psych Nps to break free from burnout, overwhelm, and financial stress.

Founded by a psych NP who paid off $224,000 in 22 months and redesigned her entire life, this community exists to help NPs do the same!

A few years ago, I remember walking into work and thinking, “I hate being here.”

It wasn’t the work. I loved my patients. But I was working with someone who made the environment so toxic that I dreaded being around her every day. I was miserable, but I also felt stuck because financially, I didn’t feel like I had the option to leave.

Fast forward to today, and I’m still at the same job. That person is gone, the environment is completely different, and I actually love where I work.

But something else is different too. If I ever found myself in that situation again, I would never stay as long as I did before because I no longer feel like I have to stay somewhere that is costing me my peace just to protect my paycheck.

That is one of the things financial freedom has changed for me. When your finances are in order, you can make decisions from a very different place. You can leave if you need to, but you can also stay, speak up, set boundaries, or take a stand knowing that even if the outcome isn’t what you hoped for, you’re going to be alright.

There is a different kind of confidence that comes from knowing your entire financial life is not dependent on keeping one particular job.

So what about you?

Are you staying in a miserable work situation because your finances have convinced you that you don’t have a choice? Do you feel stuck because you need every paycheck just to keep everything going?

I’m not telling you to quit your job.

I’m telling you to work a plan.

Pay down the debt. Build your reserves. Get your financial house in order so that when you make your next career decision, you are making it because it is right for you, not because your bills have made the decision for you.

Because changing jobs without changing your financial situation can leave you feeling just as trapped somewhere else.

That is why financial freedom matters.

There’s a part of my debt freedom story I’ve told a hundred times, but I’ve never told it in full.

Faith was in it the whole time.

Not loud. Not something I led with. Just quietly present, the same way it shows up for me in the exam room. It’s not something I announce. It’s simply there when a decision really matters.

It was there in the $224,000.

It was there in those 22 months.

It was there every month when the tracker on my bathroom door barely moved and I kept going anyway, because I believed the work was worth finishing even when I couldn’t see the finish line yet.

I’m not sharing this because I’m changing who this space is for.

The Psych NP Collaborative is still for every Psych NP, whatever you believe. The financial principles and systems I teach don’t require you to share my faith.

But if I’m going to tell my story, I want to tell the whole story.

And the truth is, faith was part of it.

It was active.

It was quiet until needed.

And that’s pretty much how it’s always been for me.

A side hustle without a plan just adds more hours to an already full schedule.

More income cannot fix a financial system that is not working. Without a plan, the extra money may disappear just as quickly as it comes in.

The goal was never just to earn more. It was to build a system that makes every additional dollar count.

That’s what tomorrow’s post is really about.

Let's be clear about what this is.

Not a stack of side gigs. Not "just add another income stream and hope it adds up."

This is a system: get your foundation right first, then build income that doesn't cost you your two days off.

The Starter Guide is where that starts. It's free, it's specific to psychiatric NPs, and it tells you exactly where to focus before you do anything else.

This platform was never built to hand you another side hustle.

It exists to teach a financial freedom system: get clear on where your money is actually going, build a real foundation, then add income on top of that foundation, not instead of it.

Side hustles keep you working. A system gets you out.

The free Financially Free NP Starter Guide is the first step. It walks you through where you're actually stuck and what to fix first, before you add anything new to your plate.

A good income can make life more comfortable without making us financially free.

Many Psych NPs earn well but still feel unable to reduce their hours, leave an unhealthy position, or take meaningful time away.

The issue may not be how much we earn.

It may be what our income is or is not helping us build.

This week’s article explores the difference between earning a good income and creating real financial choices.

"How did you actually do it?"

That's the question I keep getting since I shared that I paid off $224,000 in debt in 22 months.

Here's the real answer, and I'm not going to pretend it was easy.

First, the debt snowball. Smallest balances first. It wasn't because it's the "smartest" math, but because I needed quick wins to keep going. Watching a balance hit zero kept me in the fight.

Second, my side hustles. Every single dollar they brought in went straight to debt. None of it touched my lifestyle.

But those two things alone didn't get me there. I picked up extra shifts on top of an already full schedule. I cut spending in ways that were genuinely uncomfortable. I delayed trips and purchases I wanted, more than once, because the debt came first.

This wasn't magic and it wasn't easy. It was a method, real sacrifice, and the discipline to point every extra dollar at it, on purpose, month after month.

Small shifts moved my finances in big ways. But there were sacrifices too. In the end, this freedom...to work when I want to, in the specialty I love, not based on the numbers (though the numbers are good!)...well, it was all worth it!

Psych NPs, if you've ever felt "successful" and broke at the same time, you're not the only one.

Back to back med checks. A caseload most people couldn't handle emotionally. Notes caught up, patients stable, license good.

And you still glance at your account and feel that little drop in your stomach.

I get it. Here's something that actually helped me: for one week, just track where your money is going. Simple. Just look and take notes.

Small shifts moved my finances in big ways. Uncertainty like this can shift too. I lived it for a while, until I decided enough was enough.

Just do this one thing for the rest of this week and we'll really another step after this.

I paid off $224,000 in debt in 22 months.

Not through willpower. Through a system.

For years I showed up every day, cared for my patients, did the work I loved. And quietly drowned financially underneath it. No one teaches us this in NP school. We learn how to diagnose and treat. Managing six figures of debt on a nurse's income? That part was on us.

So I got clear on my numbers. I made decisions from clarity, not fear. I added intentional extra income and pointed every dollar of it at the debt.

22 months later, it was gone. And I stopped taking jobs for the paycheck.

Today I work two days a week doing what I love. That's what financial freedom will do...allow you to do work that you love!
