Lil Baby Says Artists Have to Pay Him Up Front for a Feature — And He Still Gets a Percentage of Whatever the Song Makes

Lil Baby is explaining why getting him on a song can become a very expensive business transaction. According to Baby, when another artist wants a feature and they don't have a personal relationship, he expects to be paid his feature fee up front. On top of that upfront payment, Baby says his deal also includes a percentage of what the song earns, meaning his involvement doesn't necessarily end once his verse is recorded and the initial check clears.

That upfront fee alone can be substantial. In a previous interview, Lil Baby was asked about reports that he was charging as much as $350,000 for a feature. Baby corrected that number slightly, saying his price was more in the $250,000 to $300,000 range, although he might take $200,000 depending on the situation. The high price wasn't simply because artists couldn't afford him. Baby said he was regularly turning down two or three feature requests a day because he wasn't particularly interested in doing them. As he put it, “I ain’t really trying to do it. So if you want me to do it, I got a fee.”

However, Baby also makes a distinction between business and relationships. A friend isn't necessarily getting treated like an artist who simply calls his team looking to purchase a Lil Baby verse. He explained that when he genuinely likes an artist or really wants to be on a particular record, the situation can be completely different. In other words, the big feature price is largely the cost of getting Lil Baby to do a record he otherwise wouldn't have chosen to do.

The numbers also show just how much his value has grown. Earlier in his career, Baby publicly talked about a $100,000 feature price. By the time of his later interview, he was discussing $200,000 to $300,000 offers and still turning records down. So when Baby talks about requiring money upfront plus a percentage of the song's earnings, he's describing a feature as more than a one-time appearance: if someone who isn't personally close to him wants access to his name, voice and audience, he expects to participate financially in the record as well.
