3 financial tips I wish I knew at 17, not 27. 💸

Around 17–18, your financial world starts changing FAST.

You may be:
• Choosing college and figuring out how to pay for it 🎓.
• Getting your first credit card or being exposed to credit for the first time 💳.
• Taking out student loans and agreeing to debt you may carry for years 📚.
• Opening your first bank accounts and managing money more independently 🏦.
• Making bigger financial decisions without fully understanding the long-term cost 💰.

The problem? A lot of us are expected to make these decisions before anyone teaches us how money actually works.

I thought “being good with money” just meant saving what I could. Yet after 3 degrees, 6 years, and $58,963.21 in student debt, I’ve learned that money management is really about planning for the life you want tomorrow.

Here are 3 things I wish I understood sooner:

1. Budget for your future, not just your present. A budget isn’t about restricting yourself. It’s about making sure today’s decisions support tomorrow’s goals.

2. Understand your debt BEFORE you take it on. Credit cards, student loans, interest, repayment terms(it all matters!). Don’t wait until you’re already overwhelmed to learn how it works.

3. Know your numbers and check in regularly. Your credit, debt, spending, and repayment progress tell a story. Tools like ScoreNavigator can help take some of the guesswork out so you can make more informed financial decisions.

I can’t go back to 17, but I can share what I wish someone had told me then. 🌿 If you’re navigating student debt too, save this and let’s learn together.

Financial and credit literacy starts at home, but not everyone has access to the tools and guidance needed to build these skills. Too often, young people fall into financial traps simply because they were never taught how to make smart choices with money and credit.

This scholarship celebrates high school juniors and seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher who took the time to reflect on their own financial journeys and share how they plan to use that knowledge to build a stronger future.

Below are the winners’ own testimonials — in their words, on what financial literacy has meant to them and where they’re headed next. Each winner is receiving $500 to support their next steps. Their stories are a powerful reminder that financial education can change the trajectory of a life. We’re so proud to invest in theirs. 💰📚

A new chapter is beginning for ScoreNavigator. ⚾🥎

We’re proud to announce ScoreNavigator ownership of The Factory Sports Training of Georgia.

At first glance, financial wellness and youth sports may seem like two completely different worlds, but the foundation is more connected than you might think. Discipline, preparation, accountability, consistency and goal setting matter on the field, with your finances and throughout life.

Through The Factory, our vision goes beyond developing baseball and softball players. We have an opportunity to help young athletes build skills that prepare them for life, while introducing financial education earlier through topics like saving, budgeting, credit, college preparation, careers and entrepreneurship.

ScoreNavigator will also proudly serve as The Factory’s Official Uniform Partner, representing our commitment to the athletes, families and communities we have the opportunity to serve.

This is bigger than sports. It is an investment in the next generation. We’re excited for what’s ahead!

Train with purpose. Compete with character. Prepare for life. ⚾

The balance gets your attention…but that interest is what you need to understand.

One thing adulthood has taught me is that borrowing money is only part of the equation. Whether we’re talking about student loans, credit cards, or other types of debt, understanding how interest works can make a big difference in how you plan.

Here are 3 things I wish I had known sooner:

1. Know your interest rate
Your interest rate helps determine how much borrowing that money costs you. Two balances that look exactly the same can cost very different amounts depending on the rate.

2. Understand how your interest is calculated
Interest isn’t always handled the same way. Depending on the account, it may accrue daily, monthly, or under different terms. Knowing how yours works helps you better understand why your balance may change.

3. Look beyond the minimum payment
A minimum payment tells you what you’re required to pay, but it doesn’t always tell you the full story of how long repayment could take or how much interest you could pay over time. Take a look at your balance, rate, payment, and repayment terms together.

I may have graduated from college, but apparently the financial education continues. 😂🎓

What is one thing you wish someone had taught you about interest sooner?

I use ScoreNavigator as one of my accountability tools to stay more aware of my finances. If you’re working on becoming more intentional with yours too, use code HALL10 for 10% off your membership.

Graduated. Got the diploma. Entered the real world. Then came the financial plot twist…

College has resources to help you navigate things like financial aid, loans, payment plans, and getting through school. BUT, what about after graduation?

The emails slow down. The built-in support system changes. And unless you’ve built strong relationships with mentors, professors, or peers, figuring out your next financial move can suddenly feel very…DIY. 😅

🎓 Degree: secured.
💸 Student loans: still here.
📈 Financial confidence: now accepting applications…& that’s the part we don’t talk about enough.

You’re not supposed to magically know everything about credit, budgeting, debt, or financial planning just because you walked across a stage. Financial confidence is built by continuing to ask questions, using the resources available to you, and creating accountability around your financial decisions.

That’s one reason I’m partnering with ScoreNavigator because their tools can help you better understand your credit while adding more accountability to your financial journey. When you are ready to bring more accountability to your financial journey, be sure to use code HALL10 for 10% off your ScoreNavigator membership.

Okay, graduates, be honest…what’s one part of post-grad life you were NOT prepared for? 😂👇

One thing I miss about college is knowing exactly when something was due. Adulthood does not always give you a syllabus😅.

That is why I value tools that help me stay aware and accountable in my everyday financial life. ScoreNavigator helps me see what is happening with my money so I can make more intentional decisions along the way.

If money management were a college course, what would you want covered first?

Also, when you are ready to bring accountability to your financial journey, go to www.ScoreNavigator.com and use code HALL10 for 10% off your monthly membership.

A paycheck feels a little different when everyone (and everything) wants a piece of it.

For many of us, rent, groceries, and transportation were already part of life before graduation. The bigger adjustment is realizing that student loans, credit card balances, and other financial responsibilities are now entering the picture too.

Whether repayment begins immediately or you have a grace period, this is not the time to ignore what you owe. It is an opportunity to understand your balances, learn how interest works, and prepare your spending before another payment joins the monthly lineup.

That is where ScoreNavigator helps you feel more aware of what is happening with your money. Between budgeting tools, account monitoring, due date calendars, and simulators, you can spend less time guessing and become more intentional about the responsibilities ahead.

You may not be able to stop every bill from saying “Mine,” but you can decide how prepared you will be when it does. Start today and use code HALL10 for 10% off your membership.

Which financial responsibility has put the most pressure on your paycheck?
