2 Bar C Ranch managers, herdsmen, and staff are proactively taking extra measures to protect our herds from the New World Screwworm (NWS) parasite by increasing the frequency of daily rotational checks to ensure early detection and prevent infestation. In addition, we have implemented a rotational fly spray regiment.
• The NWS is a pest that affects all hosts equally. The screwworm fly lays its eggs in open wounds of humans, livestock, and wildlife.
• Screwworms do not infest other food sources like meat, fruits, or vegetables; they require a live host.
• Infestation, infection, and death among livestock emphasizes the need for timely detection and intervention.
The cattle herd in the US is currently at its smallest national inventory in 75 years. The 2 Bar C team is ready and has implemented early detection protocols for the pest. We haven’t found the pest in our herd yet, but we know it’s on its way.
Saturday, June 6, 2 Bar C Ranch hosted approximately 40 attendees for a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification course. The weather was ideal for attendees to transition between indoor class and the outdoor session at the AI facility featuring live animals.
Special appreciation is extended to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Beef Loving Texans, Texas Beef Council, and Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association for their support of Beef Quality Assurance. Informative topics led to insightful discussions regarding Beef Safety, Product Quality, Environmental Stewardship, and Animal Well-Being. We appreciate the instructors who taught in both English and Spanish, providing attendees with the chance to expand their knowledge, review key concepts, ask questions, share solutions, and network with industry professionals.
At 2 Bar C Ranch, cattle are raised with utmost respect, adhering to stringent care standards. From birth to plate, all staff members handling live animals at 2 Bar C Ranch and Hometown Meat Market are Beef Quality Assurance certified.
