It can feel heart wrenching when our children are melting down during drop offs. Their intense protest of our departure can lead us to feel like we are traumatizing them or abandoning them or, that they aren’t secure in some way. But for children under 5 (and highly sensitive children at any age), separation protest is a sign of secure attachment with us. Especially at the beginning of a new year when they are in a transitional time and creating new relationships with teachers and providers. The key is to stay as calm and compassionate and consistent as you can. Create a sweet and fun separation ritual that they can trust to happen each time and a fun reunion ritual for the end do the day. The more adjusted and familiar the school space becomes the less likely they are to protest ongoing. Will it be easy? Naw. But you can do it and so can they. Love on.
