Decades before today’s kitchens became hubs for entertaining and connection, Kitchen Distributors was already designing with those ideas in mind. This 1960s modern kitchen showcases many principles that still shape luxury kitchen design today: expansive islands, open flow between living spaces, integrated functionality, and a strong architectural presence.
Looking back at projects like this is a reminder that thoughtful design isn’t defined by trends. It’s defined by how well a space continues to function and feel relevant over time.

Choosing between light and dark kitchen cabinetry impacts far more than aesthetics. Cabinet color influences how spacious a kitchen feels, how natural light moves through the room, and the overall character of the space.
In many projects, the best decision comes down to understanding the home's architecture, the amount of natural light available, and the atmosphere the homeowner wants to create.
We recently explored the advantages and considerations of both light and dark cabinetry in our latest blog post. Read the full article here: https://www.kitchendistributors.com/light-vs-dark-kitchen-cabinets

Innovation in design often starts with paying closer attention to how people actually live.
P.G. Hartman, founder of Kitchen Distributors, built his career on that principle. After meeting a woman using a wheelchair who struggled to navigate her kitchen, he took the time to understand her daily challenges firsthand. The result was a fully functional, thoughtfully designed space tailored to her needs, a project later showcased at the 1973 Colorado Garden & Home Show and featured in the film The Wheelchair Kitchen.
He was known for this kind of thinking. Constantly questioning, refining, and pushing for better solutions, even when it meant challenging industry norms. That legacy of curiosity and commitment to improvement continues to shape our work today.

Some materials carry a presence that doesn’t need to be overstated 🤫
In this kitchen, Calacatta marble sets the tone, with veining that moves intentionally across surfaces to create continuity and flow. Natural oak cabinetry softens the composition, while integrated elements keep the overall experience clean and uninterrupted. It’s a study in restraint, where every decision supports a cohesive, highly considered result.

Sustainability in kitchen design goes beyond selecting “green” products. It comes from thoughtful planning, durable materials, and systems that support long-term use.
Here are four design decisions that contribute to a more sustainable kitchen:
• 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Today’s appliances are designed to reduce energy and water consumption while improving overall performance.
• 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: High-quality materials like natural stone, hardwood, and well-built cabinetry extend the life of the kitchen and reduce replacement cycles.
• 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: Selecting materials that are sustainably harvested or produced helps reduce environmental impact.
• 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: LED lighting and well-planned task lighting lower energy usage while improving visibility and usability in the kitchen.
