Our team recently traveled to Bozeman, Montana for an early-phase site walk at the new Signature Aviation terminal and hangar, where we're providing Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) commissioning services. Signature Aviation's facilities serve business aviation travelers, private aircraft owners, corporate flight departments, and flight crews who expect a premium experience from the moment they arrive. Their facilities must deliver exceptional comfort, reliability, safety, and operational performance in every season, making the quality and functionality of building systems a critical component of the customer experience.
Commissioning starts long before a building opens its doors. By getting involved early, we help identify potential issues, verify design intent, and ensure critical building systems are positioned for long-term performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
In a climate like Bozeman, where winter temperatures can drop well below zero—careful review of freeze protection measures, heating systems, building controls, emergency power, plumbing infrastructure, and ventilation systems is essential to keeping facilities operational year-round.
We're proud to support this exciting aviation project and help deliver a facility that performs as intended from day one.

Randolph, MN – Thompson Engineering provided mechanical and plumbing design services for the Randolph Terminal Upgrade for River Country Co-op, a key agricultural facility supporting local farming operations in Randolph, Minnesota. This project highlights our expertise in designing infrastructure that directly supports the agricultural supply chain—from fertilizer storage to distribution.Agricultural facilities operate in demanding environments where system performance, durability, and reliability are essential—especially during critical planting and growing seasons. Our design approach focused on delivering systems that can withstand corrosive materials, manage dust and air quality, and perform consistently through extreme seasonal conditions common in the Midwest. The project included three buildings, each serving a vital role in supporting agricultural operations:

Office Building (3,800 SF):
Designed to support co-op staff and daily operations, this space required efficient HVAC systems that provide year-round comfort while maintaining indoor air quality in close proximity to fertilizer handling. The design ensures a clean, healthy environment for employees supporting agricultural customers.

Shop Building (4,800 SF):
This facility supports equipment maintenance and operational readiness. Mechanical systems were designed for durability and flexibility, accommodating large equipment, open bay conditions, and variable occupancy. Heating and ventilation solutions were selected to provide freeze protection and maintain safe working conditions in a rugged agricultural setting.

Dry Fertilizer Building (12,000 SF):
As the operational core of the terminal, this building required a highly functional and resilient design. Mechanical systems were tailored to manage dust and airflow associated with fertilizer handling, while also accounting for the corrosive nature of materials. The design prioritizes longevity, safety, and minimal maintenance to support continuous agricultural operations.Across all aspects of the project, Thompson Engineering delivered practical, efficient solutions aligned with the realities of agricultural facilities. Our experience with ag-focused infrastructure allows us to anticipate operational needs, reduce downtime risk, and design systems that support farmers and co-ops when it matters most.

We’ve been getting more calls lately from building owners who are confused about new energy requirements in Denver and Colorado.

Some owners recently received a notice and are wondering if they need to do something. Others thought they were already compliant, but are now seeing new terms like Data Verification, Benchmarking, Building Performance, and EUI targets.

If you’re in that boat, you’re not alone. These programs can be confusing, and you do not have to become an energy compliance expert just to understand where your building stands.

Feel free to send us a message or give us a call. We’re happy to help point you in the right direction.

Lieutenant Colonel John W. Mosley VA Clinic – Aurora, Colorado

We are proud to have embarked on a collaborative mission to support the new construction of a Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Aurora, Colorado. This visionary project serves as a tribute to the distinguished legacy of Lieutenant Colonel John W. Mosley, honoring his contributions and dedication to our nation. “His commitment to serving his nation and our community in the face of discrimination is an inspiration and reminder to us all that the promise of this country is in those who are determined to improve our imperfections. We are forever grateful for his service to this country and it is an honor to introduce legislation to name the new Aurora VA facility after LTC Mosley.” says Rep. Jason Crow.

The clinic is designed to enhance healthcare accessibility for veterans in the region, ensuring they receive the quality care they deserve. Spanning 30,000 square feet, the medical office building is situated on a 4.6-acre site, incorporating thoughtful design elements that promote efficiency, durability, and patient comfort.

Key sitework components include the development of a 146-space parking lot, essential utility connections, and carefully planned landscaping to complement the facility’s surroundings. The building itself is constructed with a shallow concrete foundation and a robust steel structure, integrated with light gauge metal framing to ensure long-term stability and resilience.

The building recently celebrated its ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a significant milestone in providing essential healthcare services to veterans. Our team played a crucial role in the mechanical and plumbing design of the facility, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability. The mechanical systems are designed to provide efficient climate control and ventilation, meeting the high standards required for a medical facility. Advanced plumbing solutions were implemented to support the clinic’s specialized healthcare functions, including medical gas, water efficiency measures, and sanitary waste systems.

With construction now completed, this project reflects our unwavering commitment to engineering solutions that serve communities and make a lasting impact. “Never discouraged by adversity, he often said that ‘he had to fight in order to fight.’ A pilot with the famed Tuskegee Airmen, he served his country with pride and distinction through three wars and continued his service after retiring from the military. Always in our hearts, he was and continues to be a champion for our family, our community and our nation. His legacy is an inspiration to us all,” said Captain Eric Mosley, United Airlines, Lieutenant Colonel Mosley’s son. We are honored to have contributed our expertise to a facility that will play a crucial role in providing essential healthcare services to our veterans as well as honoring the legacy of a true American hero.

Engineering Sweet Experiences: Behind the Stanley Chocolate Factory in Estes Park

Nestled in the foothills of Estes Park, the Stanley Hotel has always carried an air of wonder. Its history, its architecture, and its stories continue to draw visitors from around the world. When the opportunity came to help transform one of its historic buildings into the new Stanley Chocolate Factory, our team at Thompson Engineering was honored to be part of a project where craftsmanship, preservation, and creativity intersected.

The building that now houses The Stanley Chocolate Factory has stood for more than a century and was opened in 1907 as the Presbyterian Church of Estes Park. At that time, there were no municipal building codes to ensure the safety and longevity of the buildings structure, which proved to create expensive and complicated challenges down the road. Working within a century-old structure comes with challenges and rewards. The building’s original architecture required our team to design mechanical and plumbing systems that deliver modern performance without disturbing historic elements. Every piece of equipment, every run of piping, and every airflow strategy had to be carefully placed to protect the building’s character while supporting entirely new uses like the chocolate making and tasting experience, The Wh***ey Vault, Steamer Cafe, and rooftop bar.

The heart of the building is the chocolate factory itself, where guests can watch small-batch chocolate being crafted with precision. Chocolate production requires strict temperature, humidity, and ventilation control. Our team designed systems to support chocolate tempering and production, sanitation and food-safe plumbing needs, and odor control to maintain a pleasant guest experience. The result is a space where guests can see, smell, and taste the process from bean to bar.

Hidden within the building is a one-of-a-kind wh***ey vault offering curated tastings and an intimate atmosphere. This environment required unique mechanical and ventilation considerations to preserve the integrity of the spirits while keeping guests comfortable. Subtle, quiet, and efficient systems were key to preserving the mood without drawing attention.

The rooftop bar invites guests to take in sweeping views of Estes Park while enjoying craft cocktails. It may seem simple for an outdoor space to just exist, however this outdoor space in mountain climates require special planning for heating and cooling transitions, wind considerations, drainage and plumbing accommodations and guest comfort during changing weather. Integrating these systems into a historic footprint, and doing so without detracting from the views, was a rewarding challenge for our team.

Located within the building, the Steamer Cafe offers pastries, coffee, and quick bites for visitors exploring the property. Our plumbing and mechanical solutions had to accommodate both food service requirements and the historic limitations of the building, ensuring efficient operations without visible concessions to modern infrastructure.

The Stanley Chocolate Factory isn’t simply a renovation; it’s a reimagining of a historic space into a vibrant guest destination full of sensory experiences. From chocolate-making to wh***ey tasting to taking in views from the rooftop bar, each experience is supported by thoughtful engineering behind the scenes.

For Thompson Engineering, this project reflects what we do best: solve intricate challenges, respect historic architecture, and help create spaces people truly enjoy.
