SC Legal Tidbit: More and more people are getting complacent and harming themselves. Do you know how many âprofessionalsâ or so called âexperiencedâ shooters have had negligent discharges? It would blow your mind!
I instill several rules in the heads of my students and followers. I hope you listen:
1. ALWAYS treat it as if itâs loaded.
2. KEEP your finger off the trigger.
3. POINT in safe direction always.
4. NO AMMO in the room when cleaning your guns,
5. CLEAR your firearm before moving forward. The chamber holds a round ya know. Pulling the trigger makes it go bang!
6. NO show and tell! Keep your gun holstered. Stop pulling them out to show others.
7. DONâT allow distractions while cleaning your fi****ms.
8. DONâT let your arrogance convince you that youâre better or smarter than everyone else. You will be the first one to shoot yourself.
PSA: Think the best of the best are exempt? Historical USMC Negligent Discharges (NDs) show The Marine Corps Safety Division tracked 54 total firearm negligent dischargesâboth on- and off-dutyâacross a five-year period. All of these incidents were attributed to a failure to follow the basic weapons safety rules. Thatâs more than 10 a year on average.

I have come across more cases of what I refer to as Basement People. This is everywhere. It can go on for years without anyone knowing. It also goes on with no one ever knowing what happened to them or by whom.
Know the signs. Pay attention. If ever in doubt, or curious, say something.
Read my entry The Dungeon Next Door, and learn about the neighbors you donât know you have.
THE DUNGEON NEXT DOOR The neighbor was so quiet and kept to himself. âNo one would ever have believed he had a family stashed in his basementâ. You read about this and you hear stories, but they are rare and far from home, right? Not so fa...

Do any of these findings surprise you?
SC Legal Tidbit: Watch this and see all of your training at work. Everything you see was by the book and required knowledge and practice.
Carry: He carried his firearm ON him with easy and immediate access. He would not have had access from any other location. It was also loaded and chambered. The extra step to action a safety takes time. You donât have time to remember to disengage.
Situational Awareness: The attacker was not running or fighting his way toward the vehicle. He was walking calm and slow while the man recognized it was not normal. He acted instead of waiting it out to wonder what was happening. He went into action instead of standing in hesitation.
Not Rational: I have said a million times that the visibility and showing of your firearm does NOT stop or scare off a bad guy. When he saw the manâs firearm it did nothing to stop him, so that was warning enough and he fired. Another reason warning shots do not exist.
Target Awareness: We learn to know your target and whatâs beyond. He stayed cool and attentive enough to get the children out of the line of fire. PSA side note: when someone is ordering people to move, shots WILL be fired!
Your Audience: Remember my lessons on involving your audience. He made it personal and asked the witnesses to get involved. Thatâs how you get help for you or others. Make it personal and they will not fall into the Bystander Effect. Thank those that got involved!
Ten Rounds: Why did he shoot ten times? Because he ran out of ammo. People do not have the mental focus to count how many times they fire. We can thank adrenaline for that gift. He fired ten times because he ran out of ammo. We fire until the target is no longer a threat. That means the target stops moving (unable to retrieve a weapon) or you run out of ammo. He was on top of this man and would only stop when the target stops moving or he can no longer fire. Usually the latter. This is why a 10-round magazine is a means of self preservation. He should have had 10+1 if you want to be honest.
Castle Doctrine: Stand Your Ground was mentioned, and he did so; however, being in the car allows for the Castle Doctrine in many states, including SC. You donât walk into someoneâs house as a threat and your car is treated the same. Itâs your castle. Any means necessary.
The Aftermath: This man did not leave his house thinking he would have to kill someone or fight for his familyâs lives. He and his family will have to deal with this emotionally. The physical and mental weight will be heavy. Give them grace and protect their feelings not allowing them to be judged or bullied.
Your PSA For Today: Yes WAY, Jose!
Have you ever had that look? đ¤Ł
SC Tactical Tidbit: Start talking to your children about safety in all areas. One simple task can mean the difference in self-preservation or bust. One simple task is to teach children to ALWAYS walk though doors to the right. When they are in school, in public, and home.
When there is chaos and uncertainty, stay right! This prevents panicking people from stampeding and getting blocked in doorways.
If you remember âgo through the right door because the right door is rightâ, or âstay right when in flightâ, they will not only make this a memorable action in unexpected chaos, it becomes muscle memory. Thatâs what allows us to respond the way we should when we are overwhelmed, frightened, or under the dump of adrenaline.
Stay safe folks, and look past your nose for simple ways to stay safe.
