Today was a great day in Jackson County!

The morning kicked off touring Jackson Energy headquarters and learning about how their teams serve co-op members and the efforts during outages and emergencies. After that we had a panel with Southeast Kentucky Economic Development Corporation and FOCUS on economic development.

After a delicious lunch we heard from Judy Schmidt about the efforts, headed to Flat Lick Falls Recreational Park to check out the facilities.

We rounded out our day with a discussion on rural infrastructure with the PRTC - Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative and Jackson Energy.

Thank you to our panelists and hosts! Thanks to our sponsors Appalachian Wireless , Jackson Energy, and PRTC - Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative!

We had a great day in Estill County!

After learning about different economic development structures and the Estill Development Alliance, we did some skill building activities. Then we heard about tourism from a local and regional perspective from Explore Estill, Beattyville/Lee County Tourism, and Jackson County KY Tourism.

After lunch, our crew visited Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. and learned about the multiple facets of economic development happening there and toured the museum.

Finally, we learned about the resources in our region to both support folks in recovery and our local communities from Reliance Works and Marcum and Wallace Hospital and Project HOME.

Thank you to our panelists and hosts! Thanks to our sponsors Appalachian Wireless , Jackson Energy, and PRTC - Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative!

Today was the final official activity for the 2019 class of Leadership LEAP. We had an amazing and fun adventure testing out our team-building and leadership skills at Countdown Games in Lexington. Half of our squad escaped their castle under the wire while the other half just ran out of time and remained "cursed" in the Pharoah's tomb. Regardless, we all had a ball! Thank you to all the participants and their employers and all the folks who helped us make this program happen! Also, as always, a HUGE thank you to our program sponsors for making LEAP possible! Appalachian Wireless, New Vista KY, Jackson Energy, Clark Energy, Pickup Country 104.9 FM WSKV, Whitaker Bank, and Marcum and Wallace Hospital!

When leaders from a community get together to share ideas, big things can happen.

Over the past decade, one leadership program in particular has taken off. Leadership Estill County started in 2010, and its organizers quickly realized the power that many counties could have in working together to combat similar issues of economic development, opioid crises, and more. They grew to serve four counties, and now are a six-county effort: Leadership LEAP.

“We begin the year seeing each other as high school sports rivals and being ‘on the other side of the mountain’ from each other, but we finish the year as a unified force and knowing that we’re so much stronger together than we could ever be apart,” said Estill Development Alliance Director Joe Crawford.
