The Saola is one of the rarest mammals on Earth, living deep in the remote forests of Laos and Vietnam and so elusive that scientists have almost never seen one in the wild. Despite looking like an antelope, it is actually more closely related to wild cattle and has two long, straight horns that both males and females possess. Very few photos exist, mostly captured via motion-activated camera traps in the Annamite Mountains or from individuals briefly caught by villagers, while many images online are artist reconstructions based on skulls, horns, and the few real photos. One little-known fact is that the saola was only discovered by science in 1992 from skulls found in hunters’ homes, making it one of the most recent large mammal discoveries
