Norfolk and Western 611 - Country Run

Hauling the last train of the day, N&W 611 makes its way east through Swoop, Virginia, bound for Staunton. Running good, the steam engine only leaves a light wisp of gray smoke as the engine chugs under Hewitt Road.

Conemaugh & Black Lick 111 - Just Like the Old Days

The little EMD SW7 switcher works a short cut of freight cars down an industrial spur, finally seeing sunlight after a rainy morning.

Taken on Kodak Portra 800 on a Canon EOS 30, you cannot deny that, if you were to view this image at a passing glance, believe that it was taken some time back in the 1980s or 1990s. And with the use of the WMSR trackage in downtown Cumberland to look like it was in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, it really did feel like the old days.

WMSR 1309 - C&P Bridge 2

Pulling that last train of the day, Western Maryland 1309 storms across the old Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad No. 2 bridge. This bridge crosses over the original Western Maryland right of way, the WMSR uses the C&P line to bridge up and over to Frostburg, Maryland.

Conemaugh & Black Lick 111 - Freight Move Through Town

Hauling a short cut of gondolas in the rain, Conemaugh & Black Lick SW7 111 works its way down the line, headed out of Cumberland, Maryland.

WMSR 1309 - Over The National Road

Western Maryland 1309 makes its way through the steel truss bridge that crosses over Route 40, just north of The Narrows, as the massive 2-6-6-2 leads its train up to Frostburg, Maryland.

Below, Wills Creek flows the opposite direction to join into the North Branch Potomac River. The bridge abutments of the old Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad still remain, a branch line that went through La Vale to the Eckhart Mines, just southeast of Frostburg, Maryland.

C&TSRR 487 - Passing Jukes Tree

Over a century old and an icon of the Cumbres and Toltec, this Ponderosa Pine has been dubbed Jukes Tree not because of its unique shape over the C&TSRR right of way, but actually from railroad photographer, Fred Jukes, who frequently photographed the D&RGW steam engines under this tree, making it one of the most photographed spots along the line.

WMSR 1309 - Ahead Full

Western Maryland 1309 storms ahead as it crosses over Patty Baker Road, as it leads its train to Frostburg, Maryland. This rail line really puts the massive 2-6-6-2 articulated to work, the route is a steady 1.5-1.75% grade climb, before a grueling 3% grade on the final 2 mile climb to Frostburg.
