Today’s mochi-making class was a big hit! Mariko-sensei and Sarinna-san instructed us. The trickiest part was how long to leave the dough in the microwave to get it just right. It seemed that four minutes, then stirring the dough, and then another four minutes worked for some groups. Mariko-sensei’s homemade azuki bean paste was amazing. Thanks to everyone who helped with this event!

Mr. Ito, the Japanese tea expert from Shiga prefecture, visited our Japanese classroom recently. Mr. Ito was accompanied by Ms. Nakajima, the Shiga representative, and Ms. Kanemura, who does Shiga promotions. The class, along with guests Andrea Hougland, Angela Resseguie and Melissa Kaplan, really enjoyed learning about tea production in Shiga. We also sampled one of their special teas.

Japanese club members did a great job at our fundraiser today. We had all kinds of cool stuff thanks to donations by our members and friends. If you weren’t able to shop, but wanted to donate to our club, please let us know. LCC now has a Venmo account that the clubs can use to accept donations.

Bri-san presented her Japanese Honors Project on the history of tattoo art in Japan. She also brought temporary tattoos that she had designed herself. Next Irene-san presented her Honors Project on wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets. She also brought in a variety of wagashi for us to try. After these presentations, our Japanese Club members and guests played the Japanese card game, karuta. We used hiragana cards rather than the traditional cards with poems. Kawaguchi-sensei led the game and everyone had lots of fun.
