Brandon Ingram will miss the start of the Clippers' season after surgery revealed a partially torn Achilles — discovered only after Los Angeles acquired him in the Kawhi Leonard trade. Toronto's original May announcement described the procedure as just a heel spur removal.
No return timetable has been set. Ingram was projected as the Clippers' leading scoring option once healthy, coming off a 21.5-point season. This is the centerpiece piece L.A. got back for a two-time Finals MVP, and they currently don't know when they'll see him play.
The Vikings traded J.J. McCarthy to the Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick Monday, ending a tenure that saw the former No. 10 overall pick buried at third string behind Carson Wentz. His 2025 numbers explain why Minnesota moved on: a 36.1 QBR that ranked 38th out of 45 qualifying quarterbacks.
For the Giants, this is a fast response to Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee surgery — instead of pursuing a veteran, New York bet on a 23-year-old reclamation project reuniting with the Harbaugh coaching family, having played for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and now joining John Harbaugh's Giants.
The price tag says it all: a fifth-round pick means Minnesota's evaluation of McCarthy had crashed hard. Does this move the needle for either team?
Kyler Murray has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bears after his Week 1 concussion didn't clear in time. Carson Wentz makes his second straight start, following a three-touchdown, 29-unanswered-point comeback performance last week.
The bigger story: J.J. McCarthy, who started 10 games for Minnesota last season, remains buried behind Wentz on the depth chart for a second consecutive week. Every week this continues makes the Vikings' long-term quarterback plan less clear, not more.
Don't overthink your fantasy lineup — Justin Jefferson remains a must-start regardless of who's throwing him the ball.
Aaron Donald makes his 2026 season debut Monday night against the Giants — his first regular-season snap in 981 days, after unretiring on a one-year, $20 million deal in August. But this isn't the moment the Rams' offseason defensive gamble fully pays off.
Donald unretired specifically to pair with Myles Garrett, and that pairing hasn't happened yet — Garrett remains on injured reserve until at least Week 6. Donald himself has been honest about managing a rotational workload rather than promising his prime-form dominance right away.
The real headline isn't "Aaron Donald is back." It's that half of the Rams' defensive investment is finally on the field, while the other half still waits.
Ben Johnson isn't just talking about winning games — after Chicago's record-setting 59-37 win over Carolina, he doubled down on his stated goal of building the highest-scoring offense in NFL history, topping the 2013 Broncos' 37.9 points-per-game record.
This week brings the real test. Minnesota's Brian Flores had the league's highest blitz rate through Week 1 and completely dismantled Green Bay's offense in the second half of their own opener. Carolina's defense and Flores' scheme are not the same challenge — this matchup tells us whether Chicago's offense is legitimately historic or just took advantage of a bad opponent.
Who wins this weekend?
The 2026 NFL season kicks off tonight with a Super Bowl LX rematch — Patriots at Seahawks, 8:20 PM ET on NBC. But the real story isn't revenge for New England.
Seattle enters as 3.5-point favorites despite losing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III (now with Kansas City) and the offensive coordinator who called their championship gameplan (now the Raiders' head coach). If the Seahawks win clean tonight without those two pieces, that's proof this was never about one player or one play-caller — the system works.
Meanwhile, New England gave Drake Maye his first legitimate WR1 in A.J. Brown, and this Patriots team was excellent on the road a year ago.
Kickoff's at 8:20 Eastern. What's your score prediction for the season opener?
The Clippers didn’t lose Bennedict Mathurin — their roster got too crowded to keep him.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Mathurin has agreed to a two-year, $16M deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, with a player option on year two. His reps withdrew his $8.8M qualifying offer from the Clippers to make the signing possible.
LA’s roster crunch built up fast this summer — they added Max Strus in the Peyton Watson trade, and the pending Kawhi Leonard deal to Toronto further reshaped the roster, leaving no clear path back for Mathurin at a price the Clippers wanted.
New Orleans, meanwhile, was reportedly the most aggressive suitor for Mathurin all summer, working to shed Jordan Hawkins’ contract specifically to create the cap room for this. Their offense ranked 20th in the league last season with no other major addition — Mathurin, who averaged 17.4 points and 5.5 rebounds after joining the Clippers, is the clearest fix that roster has gotten this offseason.

Head coach Todd Monken is expected to name his Week 1 starter Monday between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Through two preseason starts, the numbers are nearly even: Watson went 16-of-27 for 162 yards with an interception, while Sanders went 15-of-22 for 153 yards with a touchdown and two picks.
The complication: after a rough outing last week, Watson was booed by the home crowd and called the reaction “disrespectful,” pointing to fans cheering his 2024 Achilles injury on that same field. Monken says the comments won’t factor into Monday’s decision.
This one carries extra weight. Watson is in the final year of a fully guaranteed, historically criticized contract. Sanders already has a season of NFL starts under his belt. And Cleveland holds two first-round picks next year in a strong quarterback class — whoever wins this job is auditioning against that all season long.

Thompson has officially signed with the Heat after clearing waivers Sunday, a two-year deal (reports range $11.5–13M) with a player option in year two. The team made it official, with Pat Riley calling Thompson one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the league.
The moment Miami landed Giannis Antetokounmpo, Pat Riley made shooting the top offseason priority — neither Giannis nor Bam Adebayo spaces the floor. Miami even passed on re-signing Bradley Beal, who left for the Clippers, to keep this exact plan alive.
It’s the Ray Allen role almost to the number — Allen shot 37.5% in his final Heat season doing this same job. Thompson’s at 38.3% in his last Dallas year.

Denver didn’t replace Peyton Watson — they bought a different problem to solve the same hole.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, independently confirmed by the AP and Chris Haynes, DeMar DeRozan has agreed to a one-year, $3.9M deal with the Nuggets — the veteran’s minimum. Jokić, Aaron Gordon, and Jamal Murray reportedly recruited him directly, and he chose Denver over a bigger offer from Miami.
Here’s the catch: DeRozan is 37, shot just 32% from three last season, and brings real defensive limitations at this stage of his career — nothing like the two-way wing production Watson gave this roster. Denver’s luxury tax bill climbs further too, with penalties now projecting to roughly $75 million.
At the minimum salary, this is close to a no-lose value add. But it’s a scoring fix for a defense-and-shooting problem, and the hole at the 3 that the Watson trade created is still open heading into camp.
