The 2026 Kettering Heritage Trees have been awarded! Nine trees were awarded not only for their significance due to size and age, but also for enhancing the character and natural landscape of our community. Each tree will have an award placard near it posted until Halloween.

We would like to thank our Kettering Tree Committee for their effort in the selection process and to all those that submitted a tree for nomination. We are truly fortunate to have so many beautiful trees in our city!

We invite you to join us for a Virtual Artist Talk on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 12-1 p.m. featuring artist Amanda Bradley.
She will share her influences, processes and inspiration in a live artist talk over zoom, followed by a Q and A. Bradley’s exhibition, “Notations from Home," is currently on display in the Kettering Health Art Gallery at Rosewood Arts Center.
“Notations from Home” is part of the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial: The Long View. Now in its eighth iteration, the Biennial activates over 70 exhibitions at museums, galleries, universities and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Northern Kentucky in October 2026. This is a free event.

Rosewood Arts Center invites printmaking enthusiasts to Print Club! Our next meeting will be Monday, Oct. 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Rosewood Arts Center. This month’s meeting will feature guest artist Gretchen Durst Jacobs. She will share her creative process and showcase her encaustic monotypes. Free and open to artist ages 16 and up. Print Club is a great opportunity to connect with other printmakers of all levels!

PATRON SPOTLIGHT: Meet William “Bill” Lindahl!
If you’ve spent time at the Kettering Recreation Complex, you’ve likely seen Bill working hard! A retired Air Force Colonel and college professor, Bill and his wife have been proud KRC members for over 35 years.
Bill’s dedication to his health is truly inspiring. Despite facing major physical challenges—including two hip replacements, three back surgeries (including a spinal fusion) and severe neuropathy—he puts 100% effort into every single workout.
His trainer, Larry Fox, shares: "Aside from his dry sense of humor and his witty and charming personality, Bill takes his workouts very seriously. His perseverance never keeps him down."
Here is a glimpse into Bill’s fitness routine and advice for the KRC community:
Favorite Workout: Norwegian HIIT for cardio (boosting that VO2 ~ the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise) combined with total-body compound strength training.
Goals for the Coming Year: Master 3 pull-ups and shed 15 lbs!
Top Tip for New Members: "Take advantage of all the programs KRC offers and consider working with a personal trainer. Having regularly scheduled sessions helps maintain routine and keeps you accountable!"
Bill shows us that fitness is a lifelong journey of strength and resilience. Next time you see Bill around the KRC, be sure to give him a high five!

THAT'S A WRAP ON OUR SEPTEMBER POLLINATOR BIOBLITZ!
For the entire month of September, you helped us take a closer look at the pollinators living in Kettering's parks. You photographed bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, hummingbirds and all manner of pollinating creatures—and every observation you submitted became part of a bigger picture.
But this wasn't just about counting pollinators. Your observations can help us understand where species are being found throughout our parks. Our parks habitat management staff will be able to use the information gathered through this project to better understand which pollinators are using different habitats and where we are finding the greatest diversity. That information can help us make decisions about habitat restoration, native plantings, invasive species management and future pollinator habitat projects.
And now comes the fun part...
- Which park had the most observations?
- Which pollinator was spotted most often?
- Which species surprised us?
- What was the most interesting observation?
- Who submitted the most observations?
- Which park had the greatest diversity?
We'll be compiling the results and sharing what YOU helped us discover! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to stop, look a little closer, take a photograph and submit an observation. You didn't just observe nature, you helped us learn about it.

Kettering brings home NRPA Finalist Plaque!
The 2026 National Gold Medal Award winners were announced Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the NRPA Annual Conference in Philadelphia. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department was one of just four finalists nationwide in Class IV, standing among the top park and recreation agencies in the country. In Class IV, the Grand Plaque went to the Glenview Park District in Illinois.
Named a finalist earlier this year, Kettering earned a distinction reserved for the country's premier park and recreation departments.
“I’m so proud of all the work we do to serve our community every day,” said Bill Tschirhart, Director of the Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. “While we didn’t win the Gold Medal, we are among the best of the best across the country. We will celebrate bringing home our Finalist Plaque and national recognition.”

In coordination with Kettering City Schools' closure on Friday, Oct. 2, the Kettering Recreation Complex will be offering Community Drop-in in place of our regularly scheduled Youth Drop-in from 3:15-5 p.m.
- Community Drop-in gym is for families or individuals to attend. Admission will be charged per group. Anyone 18 and older should bring a picture I.D.
- $5 per resident "group" and $10 per nonresident "group"
- Group is defined as 1 adult (18 and older) and up to 3 kids or can be as small as just one individual who is 6th grade or older
- Anyone younger than 6th grade requires adult (18 and older) supervision with them.
