With all this Southeast Alaska “liquid sunshine,” our upstream rain gauges are showing about 0.93 inches of rain in the last three hours. When the hillsides get this soaked, sometimes the mountain decides it’s time for a little “landscape renovation.”

Please stay alert for signs of possible landslides, including:

Cracks in the ground, roads, or driveways
Trees or utility poles are suddenly leaning
Muddy water where it’s usually clear
Unusual rumbling sounds that aren’t the ferry or your neighbor firing up the skiff at 5 AM
Small slides or debris showing up near hillsides

Also, use extra caution around creeks and streams. Water levels can rise quickly during heavy rain and can change from a peaceful trickle to a raging Southeast express lane in a short amount of time.

If you see something that doesn’t look right, don’t hesitate to call us. We’d much rather come check out a suspicious hillside early than meet it after it decides to relocate itself downhill.

Stay safe, keep an eye on your surroundings, and remember: in Southeast Alaska, sometimes the mountains move just to keep us humble.
