How dangerous is distracted driving? While traveling to a training site today I was sitting at a stop sign and watched as a minivan that had stopped while waiting to turn left was impacted by a pickup truck going full speed on a state route. Thankfully, there was nobody in the rear seat of the van; and interestingly the airbag did not deploy on the puckup, allowing the driver's head to impact the windshield. Both drivers were taken to the hospital, but all indications are they will be ok. The driver of the pickup was looking at his phone when the accident occurred... nobody wins when it comes to distracted driving.

Are aerial lift pre-start inspections truly important? During a morning inspection before work, these guys noticed the keeper bolts had sheared off on a cylinder pin that was supposed to be "maintenance-free" (no grease zerks). In the process of disassembling by a mechanic for further inspection, one pin was broken due to severe wear and the other was significantly worn. Had the pin failed while the boom was being operated, the upper boom would have dropped uncontrollably. Talk about a near miss and a good catch...

PPE inspection training program. Providing training on proper use, care and inspection of PPE is an important component of any safety program, and certain types of PPE have additional inspection requirements beyond routine "before use" inspections.
